GI System: 8 Ways to Keep Your Gut Healthy

Without a healthy gastrointestinal or GI system, the body cannot absorb important nutrients or rid itself of waste. Keep your GI system in good working order with these eight tips.

A healthy diet is the most significant way to improve your digestive health. Specifically, Everyday Health recommends the following dietary suggestions:

ALERT: Weird Gut Bacteria Linked to Digestion, Heart, Obesity, Brain Problems

1. Eat a high fiber diet that includes both soluble and insoluble fiber. Fiber in general helps to keep food moving through the GI system easily and helps prevent constipation, registered dietician Maria Adams tells Everyday Health. Insoluble fiber, or roughage, adds bulk to solid waste and soluble fiber helps prevent watery stools by absorbing excess water.

2. Try probiotics to help combat the effects of stress, poor diet, and medications that can negatively impact the GI system. Probiotics can also improve the immune system function and absorption of nutrients from food, says Everyday Health. Probiotics can be found in yogurt, kefir, and supplements.

3. Drink plenty of water each day to help keep food moving through the digestive tract.

Besides what you eat, how you eat can also affect your GI system.

4. Eat on a schedule and try to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and any snacks around the same time each day to maintain good digestive health, says Adams.

SPECIAL: Doctor: You Can Stop Digestion Woes, Heartburn, Gas, Constipation, More

5. The Gastroenterological Society of Australia recommends eating moderate portions to avoid putting undue stress on the GI system.

6. Chew foods well and avoid rushed meals, says GESA, and your digestive system will have an easier time moving foods through and absorbing nutrients.

Finally, there are other strategies aside from eating properly that can improve GI system health, says the Weston A. Price Foundation.

7. Aim to eliminate or reduce toxins in your water and air. Install and maintain air filters in your home and keep houseplants to help clean the air. Filter your drinking water to reduce chlorine and other harmful toxins.

8. Be mindful of toxins in skin care products and cosmetics since substances applied to the skin are eventually absorbed into the body and GI system. Shop for products that do not contain harmful chemicals and heavy metals at health food stores.

Dying of Health Care: How the System Harms Americans Physically and Financially, and How to Change It

“This book is a must-read for anybody who has been, is, or will be a patient. That’s just about all of us.”

Philip Caper, M.D., past Chairman of the National Council on Health Planning and Development

“Americans simply cannot afford to ignore the ideas so clearly presented in this book.”

John Abramson, M.D., M.Sc., Lecturer at Harvard Medical School and Author of Overdosed America: The Broken Promise of American Medicine

Today, the debate about our health care system is raging, but it often seems too complex or politically-driven for people to navigate. There has perhaps never been a better time to share with the American public a book that explains the state of our health care in an honest, comprehensive, and relatable way.

Dying of Health Care, authored by a primary care physician with nearly 40 years of experience practicing in the U.S. and U.K., provides an easy-to-understand examination of the American health care system’s major problems and potential solutions. Dr. Hanna explores the all-important question facing us today: why are Americans paying much more per person for health care than those in other developed nations, but getting much less in terms of quality? Approaching this painful paradox through a clinician’s eyes, Dr. Hanna first makes a careful diagnosis and then prescribes an appropriate treatment to heal our ailing system. He shares real-life examples of patients and provides insights into the minds of doctors, including how their decisions influence the costs and outcomes of treatments.

Ultimately, Dr. Hanna exposes how the system harms us – even sometimes kills us – both physically and financially, and he offers innovative solutions that can work to create the quality, affordable system we deserve.

Best exercises for a healthy digestive system

Here is how to maintain a healthy stomach through various exercises

Our digestive system is an intrinsic network of masterfully crafted and designed organs, which work tirelessly to keep us well says Mickey Mehta, India’s leading holistic health guru. He adds, “This, of course is subject to what we eat and how well we stimulate these organs with exercises.” He shares more on how to maintain a healthy digestive system.

Know your body
Three main factors keep a human body and mind at peace: aahar (the food that we eat), vihar (the way we exercise our body), and vishram (sleep and relaxation). The human body, which is controlled by the balance between the three doshas (vata, pitta, kapha), is dependent on one’s lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle can correct, purify, and rejuvenate your body, whereas an unhealthy one can damage the system.

Regular exercise and conscious breathing (pranayama), which works on the digestive system as a gentle massage, have a favorable effect on the digestion. They activate the digestive enzymes and the bowel movement. Regular exercise is good for circulation, and it stimulates and energizes the nervous, endocrine, and muscular systems. It helps by removing all energy blocks, working holistically on your health.

Best workouts for a healthy digestive system
You must work out under proper guidance and include a combination of warm ups, stretches, and
contractions through yoga, Pilates, and cardio workouts.

Exercises such as backward and forward bends, spinal twist, pawan mukthasan, suryanamaskar, cat- pose, sethubandhasana, swimming, and cycling target the abdominal muscles. They also boost digestive efficiency, remove toxins, nourish the intestines, and promote a sense of equilibrium and an ideal metabolic state.

He adds, “Be regular, consistent, and disciplined with your diet and exercise. Let exercises ground you, give you digestive peace, and keep you Mickeymized.”

What does your gut do and how can you keep your digestive system healthy?

It can be easy to ignore the rumblings and grumblings in your tummy – after all, it’s hardly the most glamorous part of your body.

But did you realise that 70% of your immune system is in there?

Or that it contains an average of 3.5lbs of bacteria, the careful balance of which has an impact on your whole body?

Read on to get the low-down on what the gut does, and how you can keep things running smoothly…

What is the gut?

Put simply, your gut is a long tube that starts at your mouth and ends at your anus. Also known as the gastrointestinal tract, it’s responsible for processing food and drink from the moment you consume it, to the moment the body absorbs or excretes it.

“It’s one of the most important systems in the body,” says GP Dr Rob Hicks . With such a big role to fill, it’s no wonder it’s so enormous – if it were spread out flat, it would cover an entire tennis court!

How does it work?

Getty Woman holding her stomach in stress

Stress can have an effect on your stomach

“There are 10 times as many bacteria in the gut than there are cells in the body,” says expert Professor Glenn Gibson. You’ve probably heard of good and bad bacteria, but did you know they can affect how you feel?

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) causes cramps, bloating, wind and diarrhoea or constipation, but can be treated with antibiotics or probiotics.

“The gut is the largest sensory organ in the body, and has the second biggest collection of nerves, after the brain,” says Giulia Enders, author of Gut: The Inside Story Of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ .

Keep your gut healthy

“Fibre is essential for helping the gut move waste products,” says Dr Rob. Look out for wholegrains and stick to brown bread, rice and pasta to ensure you’re getting plenty of roughage.

“It’s important to respond to the call of nature when it comes too,” adds Dr Rob. “Trying to hold it can lead to constipation.”

How it affects your mood

“There is a direct connection between the gut and the brain, and this is called the brain-gut axis,” says Dr Rob.

“How we feel emotionally can influence the sort of physical symptoms we get – for example, some experience butterflies in the stomach or diarrhoea when they are nervous.”

It works the other way round too: what is happening in your gut can influence your mood – it is actually where 80% of the feel-good hormone serotonin is produced. There is a link between Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and anxiety, and a mild dose of antibiotics has been found to ease symptoms in many cases.

Are you sitting comfortably?

Getty Woman on loo

Sitting incorrectly on the loo can cause problems

“Sitting on the loo actively restricts the muscles of the colon and prevents you from emptying your bowels properly,” says Giulia. “The colon is curved, so when in the seated position you have to strain to get things going, which can cause haemorrhoids.

“Put a little chair or stool in front of the toilet so your legs are at an angle – this straightens the colon and makes it much easier to pass waste.”

Keep things moving

“Don’t focus on the old wives tale that you should go to the loo at the same time every day. You should only be concerned when you have a change from the norm,” says Dr Rob.

If you become constipated, laxatives are a good short-term measure, but if you need them regularly, think about why.

“In many cases, constipation is caused by not eating enough fibre or drinking enough water,” says Dr Rob.

Love your summer gut

Getty Woman drinking a glass of water

Keep your body hydrated

Hot weather and holidays can lead to dehydration, or stomach upsets from undercooked BBQs or holiday food.

“When abroad, make sure food is cooked through and served piping hot, and stick to bottled or boiled water rather than tap,” says Dr Rob.

What about probiotics and prebiotics?

The careful balance of bacteria in our bowels can be upset by antibiotics, stress or excessive alcohol consumption.

Professor Gibson says, “Probiotics and prebiotics outperform many medicines in stimulating a beneficial gut microbial community.”

Probiotics are good bacteria, and can be found in live yoghurt, fermented foods such as sauerkraut and drinks like Yakult. Prebiotics feed this good bacteria. Try Bimuno Prebiotic Powder (£9.99 for a 30-day supply, Boots).

When to see a GP

“Go to your doctor if you have symptoms you can’t explain, or changes in your normal toilet habits that last more than three weeks,” says Dr Rob.

Also, if you have blood in your stools or abdominal pain or bloating that doesn’t go away, get it checked. Although it’s probably down to gas, bloating can be a sign of ovarian cancer.

5 best foods for your gut

Oats (Pic: Getty Images) Eat fibre daily

Nutritionist Kimmy Pearson rounds up the best foods for better bowel health:

  1. Miso contains natural probiotics, which boost the digestive system.

  2. Flaxseeds help to reduce constipation and encourage healthy bowel movements. Eat two tablespoons of ground flaxseeds per day, sprinkled onto food, or soaked in water.

  3. Raw garlic and onion are a good source of prebiotics, which can stimulate the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.

  4. Spinach is a fantastic source of vitamin A and also provides zinc – both of which are essential for maintaining a healthy gut lining.

  5. Oats are full of fibre. Many of us fall short of the recommended daily fibre intake (at least 18g per day), which is important for good digestive health. It helps to move waste along the digestive system and prevents constipation.

Helping bacteria help us: Probiotics keep your digestive system working like it should

LAS CRUCES >> Probiotics are a vital part of a healthy lifestyle, but many of us find them mysterious.

A dictionary definition of probiotic is “a preparation (as a dietary supplement) containing live bacteria (as lactobacilli) that is taken orally to restore beneficial bacteria to the body.”

“Probiotics are bacteria that help keep the natural balance of organisms (microflora) in the intestines,” according to webmd.com. “The normal human digestive tract contains about 400 types of probiotic bacteria that reduce the growth of harmful bacteria and promote a healthy digestive system. The largest group of probiotic bacteria in the intestine is lactic acid bacteria, of which lactobacillus acidophilus, found in yogurt with live cultures, is the best known. Yeast is also a probiotic substance. Probiotics are also available as dietary supplements.”

Photo courtesy thinkstockphotos.com Kimchi, a popular Korean dish, can provide healthy probiotics.

“Probiotics: Whole Body Health Begins in Your Gut,” a recent seminar at Natural Grocers in Las Cruces, focused on the idea that “gut bacteria influence how every part of your body works: weight gain or loss, immunity, even your mood and ability to focus.”

Fans of probiotics praise their efficiency in dealing with digestive issues, but experts tend to agree that their role in fighting specific disease, such as cancer and heart ailments, is not yet understood.

Our knowledge about probiotics and their function is rapidly evolving as new studies are released, said Jonathan Clinthorne, nutrition educational specialist at Natural Grocers.

“There is more and more research linking the effects of probiotics and the idea of live microorganisms when administered in adequate amounts, to reenforce and modulate bacterium in our intestinal tracts,” he said.

While experts differ on some aspects of what’s going on inside our guts, Clinthorne opines that “with the standard American diet, our microbiome (the combined genetic material of the microorganisms in a particular environment, such as our body) is not reflective of what it’s supposed to look like from an evolutionary standpoint.”

He said recent research, based on an analysis of stool samples, and sequencing of genomes from bacterium, involved gut bacteria that number in the trillions. “We are actually more bacteria than we are human,” he said.

While most of us aren’t able to access genetic sequencing to determine exactly what’s living in our guts, there are some general guidelines we can follow that will help nourish the “good guys” who live there and innovative ways “to feed your own and add some new beneficial ones,” Clinthorne said.

“You can try liquid concentrates or supplements,” said Clinthorne, who studied at Michigan State University and the University of Colorado and holds a Ph.D. in human nutrition.

Photo courtesy thinkstockphotos.com Sauerkraut contains bacteria that is good for digestive tracts.

Photo courtesy thinkstockphotos.com Sauerkraut contains bacteria that is good for digestive tracts.

There are also a variety of strategies involving adding new foods.

Yogurt is among the best known of our probiotic pals, but for those of us who are avoiding, or allergic to, dairy products, there are many alternative options, Clinthorne said.

“Yogurt is great, and there are non-dairy yogurts that contain probiotics too. But whatever you choose, make sure it contains live cultures. There are lots of kombucha products now, too. You can try things like sauerkraut and kimchi. but make sure they are fermented with bacteria. It seems no matter what our culture, we all have some sort of fermented food like miso soup, or sauerkraut or kimchi and there has been this traditional way of incorporating bacteria. Our ancestors would have eaten a lot of fruits and vegetables to provide those guys (bacteria) with fermented fiber and those foods contain bacteria themselves,” Clinthorne said.

He said we get colonies of gut bacteria from our mothers.

“There are studies that show a strong correlation between gut bacteria and the risk of developing allergies. If a child is delivered vaginally rather than by Cesarean section, the vaginal contact inoculates the child with something slightly different, in terms of gut bacteria and the training of the immune system,” he said, adding that children born vaginally and those who are breast fed with their mother’s milk seem to be less prone to allergies.

In general, he said, if a goal is to use probiotics to help the immune system, “it is more difficult to shift than to add, because your immune system gets used to seeing certain strains and becomes tolerant.”

There are other factors that can make changes in your gut bacteria.

“Exercise has been shown to have an insulin-related impact and is related to inflammations in the body. Switching over to a vegetarian diet can have a pretty substantial impact. And antibiotics can change your bacteria, not necessarily for the better,” Clinthorne said.

In the end, you need to take responsibility for finding solutions that work for you, including a healthy diet and trusted, reliable sources of supplements, should you choose to use them.

“The takeaway, what it all comes down to, is that it’s all about building a foundation of health and probiotics can be very important in supporting health. Diet is the foundation for a healthy gut bacteria and probiotics serve as reinforcements. People should make sure to stick with well-respected probiotic strains. And there should be regular consumption, not just once a month, but continuing to consume them on a regular basis. And if you make unhealthy choices, or have health issues or take medications like antibiotics, you are going to disturb gut bacteria and it’s going to need some help to come back,” Clinthorne said.

Check with your healthcare provider and then try adding one probiotic food or supplement at a time to help determine what works for you.

“Some probiotics have been used for a very long time throughout history, such as in fermented foods and cultured milk products,” webmd.com reports. “These don’t appear to cause illness. But more study is needed on the safety of probiotics in young children, the elderly, and people who have weak immune systems. As with any dietary supplement, be aware that probiotic supplements are regulated as foods, not drugs.”

How Coconut Benefits the Brain, Liver, and Digestive System

It’s been deemed a superfood but has been used for much longer than most of us can imagine—coconut. In all forms, this one food can benefit us in so many ways. Coconut oil is a common ingredient kept in kitchens everywhere while coconut meat can be used as the perfect healthy fat to use in meals. Coconut water is perfect for hydration and electrolytes and coconut flour contains more fiber than wheat bran (and more protein) per serving to keep our bodies satisfied and systems running well. This delicious food is truly a remarkable “do it all” that many of us don’t even realize the true potential of.

coconutmeat

Fears surrounding coconut oil’s fats stemmed from the old belief that all saturated fats are bad. It is saturated fat, however, that produces hormones in the body via cholesterol. We actually need a certain amount of cholesterol in our bodies for our hormones to function optimally. The important thing is to obtain this from plant-based foods versus animal-based foods to avoid certain  health risks associated with sources such as red meat.

The best part about using coconut is that it contains no added cholesterol like animal foods, yet it boosts the formation of healthy cholesterol levels in the body, while bringing amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to the table too. One of the best benefits of using coconut oil, coconut butter (or coconut meat), and coconut shreds is the anti-bacterial and immune-boosting properties these forms have. Coconut oil contains lauric acid and certain MCT fats that fight yeasts, parasites, common viruses, even the cold, and bacterial overgrowth in the body.

But that’s not all. Coconut can also benefit the brain, liver, and digestive system too. In fact, it can heal these parts of the body in some simple ways you’ll see below. Check this out, then be sure to read the tips to pick the best kind:

1. Brain Health

Coconut-Milk (1)

Our brains need fat —plain and simple. All fats will give you a mood boost, but coconut is one of the best fats linked to preventing depression, memory loss, and aiding in stress management. One of the reasons is due to the MCT fats in coconut which bypass digestion and are immediately absorbed. Your brain can turn these into ketones for fuel which your mood benefits from as a result. These fats also enhance focus, ward off mental fatigue, and can help stabilize your blood sugar which also boosts your mood in a whole other way. Coconut’s fats and amino acids fuel neurotransmitters in the brain that boost serotonin levels to stabilize your mood and hormones. It can help with PMS, general anxiety, poor focus, and mild depression. Use a few tablespoons of coconut butter, shreds, or oil a day in conjunction with an otherwise healthy, whole foods diet (not a diet with junk foods that diminish brain health).

2. Liver Health

coconut1

Flickr

Coconut’s MCT fats help the liver detoxify from waste and allow the liver to use it for immediate energy, not storage. While an excess of anything may lead to fat storage, mild to moderate intake of coconut can be used for detoxification and energy without the need for supplements and over-the-counter drugs. Due to coconut’s anti-viral benefits, it also has the ability to reduce toxins that back up in the bloodstream and lead to a sluggish liver. Of course, it should go without saying that alcohol and an unhealthy diet can not be covered up with coconut; you still need to lead a healthy lifestyle. If you’re looking to give your body a natural detox and a boost, however, keep a jar of coconut butter (spread, manna, etc.) or coconut oil in the kitchen. Add it to a smoothie with spinach, berries, hemp, some stevia, ice, and a squeeze of lemon for a super detox, healing, and satisfying shake!

3. Digestive Health

A new way that coconut is being used in the health spectrum is for digestive health. Because of the unique way it is digested, coconut does not cause digestive upset; it can, in fact, help with IBS, slow motility, inflammation, poor nutrient absorption, regularity, and can help seal the lining of the digestive tract that may be inflamed from leaky gut syndrome, inflammation, or other gastrointestinal problems. While overdoing it is not smart, a tablespoon at meals can actually have quite the healing effect. Because it boosts your digestive health, it will also in return, boost your brain health and your overall sense of well-being.

Coconut flour is also a wonderful fiber source and protein source for those that eat a grain-free diet and suffer digestive illnesses. It is healing, filling, and will regulate the system without causing ill side effects. And finally, coconut fats fight candida yeast that lives within the digestive tract. Though you can not kill candida, it can easily take over the good bacteria in your body and feeds off sugars, processed foods, and a weak immunity. Since coconut builds immunity, supports gut health, and fights harmful bacteria, it’s an extremely beneficial food to keep around for a happy tummy, which means a happier you!

And it’s really as simple as that—coconut is not a fat to be feared. Fat is not a negative term and the sooner we can embrace nature’s best sources that are there to protect and enhance our health, the happier and healthier we will be for the long-haul!

Here’s how to choose the best types ….

Amazon

1. Always buy organic. Due to the popularity of coconut products, it may be sourced from an unreliable company that uses pesticides or chemicals, or may be processed in a way that damages the nutritional value. Look for the USDA certified seal, not just the word organic.

2. For coconut oil, coconut flour, or coconut butter (manna, spread), only buy extra-virgin, cold pressed, and/or raw. This ensures the coconut was processed at low heat and that you’re purchasing the freshest, most quality form of coconut possible. If you buy coconut shreds, always buy unsweetened and raw if you can (not the flaked coconut you grew up eating in cakes and pies by baking brands).

3. Optional, but beneficial: choose GMO-free brands. Most that are organic are today, however, not all brands are. Though this is optional, it’s an added security that you know you’re paying for the best possible.

Callisto to Offer New Reporting System for Survivors of Sexual Assault

A nonprofit organization that uses technology to improve sexual health is developing an online system for students to report sexual assaults, provide colleges with better data, identify repeat offenders, and support survivors.

The system, called Callisto and developed by Sexual Health Innovations, is intended to simplify the reporting process for students. People using Callisto will be presented with information about the processes for filing a report with their college and with local law-enforcement agencies.

If a student decides to report an assault to the college, he or she will be able to file a report through the system online that reaches the appropriate person on the campus, who will then contact the student to take the next steps.

But if a student decides not to report an assault, he or she will be able instead to record on Callisto as much or as little information as desired, save the information, and return to it at any point in the future.

Recording information about an assault rather than reporting it could be valuable for colleges, too. Although colleges will not be able to see details of a record without the student’s permission, Callisto will aggregate statistics about the users of the system, says Kate L. Lazarov, Callisto’s project officer.

When a survivor reports an assault online, some personal contact is lost. But Ms. Lazarov says the system’s use of technology will be one of its greatest strengths. Some survivors are afraid to talk about an assault or don’t know what their resources are, she says, and Callisto will help to reach those people.

This August three colleges are expected to begin a pilot project with Callisto. Ms. Lazarov declines to identify them, citing contract negotiations in progress.

The system will be just the first step in the reporting process — it is not meant to replace survivor advocates, Title IX coordinators, or counselors, says Tracey E. Vitchers, director of development for Sexual Health Innovations. The system is meant to help students determine if they want to report an assault and to take away some of the uncertainty in that process.

The system’s name comes from Greek mythology. Callisto was a nymph who took a vow of chastity and was raped by Zeus. It seemed an appropriate name for the system, Ms. Lazarov says, because “if Callisto were a person, she’d be a survivor herself.”

‘Technology Isn’t a Cure-All’

But the system’s approach raises privacy concerns, says S. Daniel Carter, director of the 32 National Campus Safety Initiative for the VTV Family Outreach Foundation, established in the aftermath of the 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech. People need to realize that you can’t guarantee security online, he says. “Anyone using this system would need to understand that.”

“It provides a useful tool for survivors who want an additional layer of confidentiality, and they’re not having to speak to an actual person who knows who they are,” he says, “but there’s no such thing as absolute confidentiality.”

Many colleges have changed their policies and procedures for reporting assaults, Mr. Carter says, but few have offered new reporting methods. Just because colleges aren’t embracing such a format, however, doesn’t mean that students won’t. Today’s students have lived most of their lives with access to such instant communication, he says, and so they may be quite comfortable with Callisto.

But technology isn’t a cure-all for sexual assaults on campuses, Mr. Carter says. The issue is much bigger than that.

“I don’t really see the channel of reporting as the main challenge,” he says. “It’s more so how the report is handled. You can have all the technology in the world, and if you don’t have good policies and procedures and a trauma-informed response to reports, how the report is made still doesn’t matter.”

On some campuses, reporting might mean phoning a total stranger and saying you were raped, says Alexandra Z. Brodsky, a founder of the advocacy group Know Your IX and a member of Callisto’s advisory board. Callisto could be a good option for someone who finds that process intimidating.

“For a student who feels in that moment that it’s really important to go to a rape-crisis center and talk through it with someone, one on one, that’s great,” she says. “But I think the reality is that a lot of students in that moment are instead behind their laptop Googling to try to figure out how their school’s reporting process works.”

A Focus on Repeat Offenders

Callisto has a special focus in identifying repeat offenders. Students who have created records of their assaults on Callisto but have not filed reports can elect to use a matching feature to help identify repeat offenders.

Here’s the scenario: A student creates a record of his or her assault, identifying the assailant, but chooses not to file a report. Later, another student is assaulted by the same person and files a report that identifies the assailant.

If the first student, who chose not to file a report, opts in to the matching feature, his or her name and the name of the assailant will be sent to the college. The record, however, remains anonymous. The college will then reach out to the student to see if, now that someone else has been allegedly assaulted by the same person, he or she wants to file a formal report or, if not, would help to corroborate the other student’s report.

Callisto’s Ms. Lazarov gives this statistic: Some studies have found that as many as 90 percent of campus rapes are committed by repeat offenders. If they were stopped after their second assault, the studies concluded, up to 60 percent of such rapes could be prevented.

Some critics say Callisto will provide an opportunity for a student with a grudge to abuse the system.

Andrew T. Miltenberg, a New York lawyer who represents young men accused of sexual misconduct, says though Callisto seems well intended, he is concerned about dangers it may pose to students who are accused. Having the ability to report someone with just the click of a button may not be a good thing, he says.

“We’re all guilty of pressing send on an angry text or email that, had we had to put it into an actual letter and proofread, we probably wouldn’t have sent,” he says.

He knows from experience that reports can be filed in fits of rage and later recanted. Going through the reporting process in person is a more “deliberate act,” Mr. Miltenberg says, and it gives the student an opportunity to think things through more so than simply typing up a few sentences and hitting the send button.

Callisto takes some steps to prevent abuse. To opt in to the matching feature, students must provide a method of contact and agree to be contacted by a college administrator. And reports created on Callisto undergo investigation by a college or local law-enforcement agency, so matching an assailant is only the first step, not the last.

Legal Protections

Laura L. Dunn, founder and executive director of the advocacy group SurvJustice, says she is concerned about reports being made through a third party like Callisto. As a lawyer, she worries about the legal protections that Callisto users would have.

There are obvious benefits to identifying repeat perpetrators, Ms. Dunn says. Callisto’s efforts to do so remind her of the FBI’s DNA database. However, she says, identifying repeat offenders presents some legal challenges, in that certain states don’t allow other offenses to be used as evidence in court.

Ms. Dunn says that Callisto is filling a gap left by law enforcement and that the need for a third-party system like it “should be a testament to how much our law-enforcement system simply fails survivors of sexual violence.”

Callisto could be a useful tool for survivors, Ms. Dunn says. She just hopes it will account for all of the necessary policy and procedural variables to avoid complicating the reporting process. It could also be valuable for law enforcement to mimic or invest in the system, she says.

“As a survivor and as an activist, I think this is amazing,” she says, “and as a lawyer, I’m cautious.”

Study: Breastfeeding prepares baby's digestive system for solid foods

Exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life prepares your baby for solid food, according to a new study. ― AFP picExclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life prepares your baby for solid food, according to a new study. ― AFP picNORTH CAROLINA, Feb 7 ― The beneficial gut bacteria that a baby develops as a result of breastfeeding prepares the digestive system to take on solid foods later, according to a small study by scientists at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

While the benefits of breastfeeding are numerous and well known ― including the fact that they promote the colonization of healthy bacteria in the gut ― the current study suggests the transition to solid foods is less dramatic for breastfed babies.

“We think the microbiomes of non-exclusively breastfed babies could contribute to more stomach aches and colic,” says senior author Dr. Andrea Azcarate-Peril, assistant professor in the department of cell biology and physiology.

Babies should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months to reap these benefits to the fullest, according to first author Dr. Amanda Thompson, an associate professor in the department of anthropology.

“We can see from the data that including formula in an infant’s diet does change the gut bacteria even if you are also breastfeeding,” says Dr. Thompson. “Exclusive breastfeeding seems to really smooth out the transition to solid foods.”

In the study, the research team worked with nine babies from whom they collected stool samples and their health and diet history from two weeks of age through 14 months.

To find out what species of bacteria were living in the babies’ bellies, the team applied genomic sequencing techniques to the stool.

In a finding consistent with past research, babies who were exclusively breastfed had different bacterial composition from those who were fed a combination of breast milk and formula.

Of notable interest was the stark contrast between stool samples of exclusively breastfed babies before and after they began eating solid food ― at which point 20 additional bacterial enzymes had taken up residence.

Meanwhile, in the babies fed a combination of breast milk and formula, 230 new enzymes had entered the scene, according to the study.

The new bacterial species help process the new foods, and the most beneficial of them for digestion is Bifidobacterium, which was found in proportionately higher numbers in the exclusively breastfed babies than in the partially breastfed babies.

“The study advances our understanding of how the gut microbiome develops early in life, which is clearly a really important time period for a person’s current and future health,” said Thompson.

How the Immune System Promotes Digestive Health

As many as 1.4 million Americans suffer from uncomfortable abdominal cramping and diarrhea that come with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. These conditions, collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), are associated with an imbalance among the thousands of species of “good” bacteria that inhabit the gut. A University of Utah study published in Cell Host and Microbe demonstrates that mice deficient for a component of the immune system, a protein called MyD88, have an imbalanced gut bacterial community – with some species dominating over others – and are more susceptible to contracting a severe IBD-like illness. Further, fecal transplants from healthy donors alleviate IBD symptoms in these mice.

The results show that the immune system encourages growth of a healthy community of “good” bacteria that is important for digestive health. This perspective on immune system function is in contrast to it’s best known role as the first line of defense in the fight against pathogens, including invasive bacteria.

“Our work highlights that the immune system shapes the composition of bacterial communities in the intestine,” said senior author June Round, Ph.D., assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. “This interaction is important because it’s becoming more and more clear that resident microbes are very important for our health.”

Considering that some people with IBD have mutations in genes that are part of a MyD88-controlled pathway, fecal transplantation – which involves collecting and processing stool from a healthy donor, and delivering it into a recipient’s gut – might help to ameliorate disease in these people, according to Round.

Loss of MyD88 disturbs the microbial community because it disrupts production of IgA. This class of antibody works like a gatekeeper that controls which types of bacteria, and how many, are allowed to inhabit the gut. By performing inventories of total gut bacteria compared to species that bind IgA, the scientists determined that without MyD88, IgA failed to recognize species that it can otherwise.

The work not only demonstrates that a balanced microbial community promotes digestive health, but that it also shapes the host’s immune system. Mice raised in a sterile, germ-free environment have a faulty immune system, a defect that can be fixed if they are fed bacterial components, TLR2 agonists, that activates the immune system. The rescue does not work in mice deficient for MyD88, demonstrating again that the protein is key to interpreting communications between microbes and the immune system.

“There is a conversation between our immune system and our resident bacteria,” explains Round. “The microbes can send signals that tell our immune system how to develop and in turn our immune system can shape what types of microbes live on our body.”

The dependency of host health on good bacteria has made the conversation a necessity. In response to demand, the immune system has adapted from a system designed to fight the body’s invaders to one that also nurtures a harmonious relationship with the body’s peaceful inhabitants.
