Diet for a YEAR to keep weight off due to changes in body's chemical make-up

  • People must stick to their diet for a year to keep weight off, study suggests

  • Change can alter the body’s chemical make-up, keeping the pounds off

  • Demonstrates biological defences to store more fat could be overcome

Tom Witherow For The Daily Mail

Perseverance pays off when it comes to diets, a study has found.

The breakthrough research suggests people may just have to stick their diet out for a year to keep weight off permanently, The Times reported.

It suggests that keeping to new habits in the long term change the body’s chemical make-up, allowing the new weight to be maintained.

Dieting has previously been shown to trigger a backlash from the body, sometimes leading to weight being piled back on.

This is because hunger is more acute during dieting – leading to snacking – and cells store more calories as fat.

But researchers in Denmark have shown these survival mechanisms can be overcome, The Times reported last night.

Obese people who shed an eighth of their weight in an intensive diet – so that would be two stone for someone who is 16 stone – and hold it off for a year saw dramatic changes in the chemicals governing their appetite.

Signe Sorensen Torekov, associate professor of biomedical sciences at the University of Copenhagen which carried out the study, said it demonstrated that biological defences could be overcome to allow weight loss.

‘It’s very difficult to fight the hunger,’ she said. ‘It’s like a drug you’re fighting against. This would have been an excellent mechanism 50 years ago, but the problem now is that we have so much food available that we can eat all the time.

‘We were able to show that you shouldn’t give up. If you’re able to keep your weight down for a year, then it shifts and it becomes easier.’

In the study, 20 obese adults were put on an eight-week diet of soups and powdered shakes for the experiment, losing an average of two stone each, before being held at that new weight for a further 44 weeks.

Researchers found three molecules govern how hungry people feel and how much they eat.

After a meal two hormones, called GLP-1 and PYY stop us feeling hungry, but hunger hormone Ghrelin wains as food is digested and its nutrients enter the bloodstream.

Many overweight people have a natural balance of these chemicals that makes them hungrier for longer, making it harder to cut back on food.

Mediterranean diet wins again, helps bones

The Mediterranean diet is well-known for its health benefits on your heart and waistline, but now your bones could benefit too, according to a new study published online by JAMA Internal Medicine.

In this study, researchers examined whether diet quality affects bone health in postmenopausal women. They found that women who ate a Mediterranean diet were less likely to suffer from hip fractures.

The Mediterranean diet is relatively easy to follow. It involves eating vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans and peas, unrefined grains, olive oil and fish. You should limit the amount of meat, dairy, and saturated fat you eat, but on the bright side you can have a glass of red wine at dinner.

Researchers analyzed data from 40 clinical centers throughout the United States included in the Women’s Health Initiative study. The analysis included 90,014 women with an average age of 64. Participants described their diets in a WHI food frequency questionnaire at the start of the study. Researchers then compared their dietary patterns to four common healthy diets, including the Mediterranean diet, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and two others.

Nearly 16 years later, there were 2,121 cases of hip fractures and 28,718 cases of total fractures. Women who adhered the most to a Mediterranean diet were 0.29% less likely to suffer from a hip fracture than women who didn’t stick to the diet. The other three diets showed negligible success.

“Our results provide assurance that widely recommended eating patterns do not increase the risk of fractures,” said lead study author Dr. Bernhard Haring of the University of Wurzburg in Germany. “This being said, the average woman should follow a healthy lifestyle which includes adopting a healthy dietary pattern and being physically active.”

Osteoporosis-related fractures are a major burden for health care systems in aging societies, with women particularly affected, said Dr. Haring. Current research results have been inconclusive about whether intake of nutrients involved in bone metabolism can prevent fractures.

However, the results of this study suggest that a healthy diet, specifically a Mediterranean diet, might play a role in maintaining bone health in postmenopausal women.

This latest Mediterranean diet research builds on previous evidence that your health might benefit if you follow this diet. It’s been shown that the Mediterranean diet can keep your brain young, help you live longer, manage your weight better, and lower your risk for cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

“At the present time, the U.S. health system almost entirely ignores nutrition in favor of pharmacology and is hugely expensive and ineffective compared with the systems in other countries,” wrote Dr. Walter Willett of Harvard School of Public Health, in a related commentary. “Integration of the Mediterranean diet and related dietary patterns into medical practice, hospitals, schools and other institutions has the potential to improve well-being.”

Could Your Healthy Diet Make Me Fat?

SOME people eat as little fat as possible to lose weight and stay healthy, while others avoid carbohydrates. A vegan diet (with no animal products) and the paleo diet (with lots) both have enthusiastic devotees. One popular diet encourages intermittent fasting, another frequent small meals. Who’s right?

Perhaps they all are, according to the new field of “personalized nutrition.”

This month, an Israeli study of personalized nutrition was heralded by a media frenzy. “This diet study upends everything we thought we knew about ‘healthy’ food,” claimed one headline. The study suggested that dieters may be mistakenly eating a lot of some foods, like tomatoes, that are good for most people, but bad for them. And it raised the possibility that an individualized approach to nutrition could eventually supplant national guidelines meant for the entire public.

Personalized medicine has already become well established in clinical practice. We know that the effects of some drugs vary from person to person and that genetic analysis of tumors can help doctors select the best cancer treatment for a particular patient. Despite the recent fanfare, we have also known for a long time that people respond differently to specific foods based on their genes, past health or other factors.

What does this mean when it comes to obesity, the most important nutrition problem today?

Unfortunately, standard diets typically fail to produce significant long-term weight loss. But those average outcomes mask tremendous individual variability. For instance, while a clinical trial published in 2005 of 160 adults randomly assigned to the Atkins, Ornish, Weight Watchers and Zone diets reported modest results in all groups after one year, individuals in those groups experienced weight changes ranging from a loss of 35 pounds or more to a gain of 10 or more.

This variation is commonly attributed to behavior. Some people are simply more motivated and compliant with their assigned diet than others. But suppose the people who did poorly on the low-fat Ornish diet would have done well on the low-carbohydrate Atkins diet because of their biological makeup, and vice versa? If we knew that ahead of time, we could assign everyone the diet that’s best suited for him or her.

This is what the Israeli study intended to explore. Investigators at the Weizmann Institute of Science used specialized devices to monitor continuously the blood sugar of 800 adults. The data showed that blood sugar after meals varied among the participants in ways that couldn’t be explained by what they ate alone. The investigators devised a computer-based algorithm taking into account many non-dietary characteristics — including body weight, blood sugar first thing in the morning and even the type of bacteria in the intestines — to predict more accurately what would happen to blood sugar after a specific person ate a specific food.

Since high blood sugar after eating is strongly associated with the risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, the study’s results now have people talking about whether a computer app might someday help us prevent chronic disease. Should you eat tomatoes, apples or chocolate? Input your characteristics and get a personal prescription for optimal health.

Blood sugar isn’t the only way to predict an individual’s predisposition to obesity-related problems. Insulin may be an even more powerful determinant. The pancreas releases insulin after you eat, and that hormone directs incoming calories into storage sites in liver, muscle and fat tissue. A few hours later, insulin levels fall, and calories re-enter the bloodstream for use by the body. This is why people with Type 1 diabetes who receive excess insulin predictably gain weight, whereas those treated with too little insulin invariably lose weight, no matter how much they eat.

The amount and timing of insulin release after a meal differs substantially from person to person. To assess this difference, researchers give volunteers a bottle of glucose to drink and measure their insulin levels 30 minutes later — the test is called the “insulin-30” level.

In a study published in 2007 in JAMA, my colleague Cara B. Ebbeling and I randomly assigned young adults to 18-month diets that were low either in fat or in processed, fast-digesting carbohydrates (called a low “glycemic load” diet). We found that individuals with high insulin-30 did better on the low-glycemic-load diet — losing 10 pounds more than they did on the low-fat diet. This suggests that people with this characteristic should really focus on cutting highly processed carbohydrates out of their diet. Individuals with low insulin-30, on the other hand, lost about the same amount of weight on both diets.

In another study published in this month’s issue of the journal Obesity, we found that people with high insulin-30 lost more muscle and less fat on a standard low-calorie diet. Their metabolisms also slowed the most when they lost weight, which means they would be likely to regain the weight in the long term.

The good news is that a person’s susceptibility to weight gain may not be written in stone. After a month on a low-carbohydrate diet, the high insulin responders were able to tolerate more carbohydrates without their metabolisms slowing down so much (though we don’t know how long this protective effect lasts).

Many other aspects of biology — genetic and acquired — undoubtedly influence how we respond to diet. But in the end, the Israeli study provides little reason to believe that a complicated 21st-century technology will work any better than a simple dietary prescription pioneered decades ago. We don’t need an app to control post-meal blood sugar; we just need to eat fewer processed carbohydrates.

Analyses of large groups of people followed carefully over many years, like the Nurses’ Health Study, suggest that many cases of diabetes and heart disease can be prevented by adhering to a few straightforward dietary practices. For this reason, it’s critically important that the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015, scheduled for release by the Department of Agriculture in the next few weeks, reflect the latest science. They should jettison the traditional emphasis on low-fat diets, which we now know have no special benefit for body weight or general health, and focus more on the quality of the carbohydrates we are eating.

Despite the hype, personalized nutrition is not ready for practical application in the clinic. But this exciting field of research may help explain why people respond so differently to diet based on biology. In this way, personalized nutrition may build upon, rather than substitute for, national dietary guidelines, providing a common ground for all sides in the “diet war” to declare a truce.

Diet Doc Creates Holiday Calorie Loading Diet Plans that Enable Patients to Enjoy Thanksgiving ...

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 17, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — While those who have been struggling to lose weight are worrying about regaining and anticipating a weight loss setback during the holidays, Diet Doc clients are looking forward to enjoying the annual high fat, high calorie recipes. This is because the company has developed calorie loading diet plans that make it possible to, not only set weight loss goals, but to actually begin losing weight during the holidays.Although it may seem counter intuitive to even imagine that the holidays could be linked in any way to a weight loss program, if approached with scientific insight, loading up with a high fat diet can actually be extraordinarily beneficial in the weight loss process.By combining the most modern medical understanding with scientific and nutritional research, along with the best trained minds in the weight loss industry, the company developed calorie loading diet plans that enable their patients to lose weight, even during the holidays, without worry, anxiety or weight gain guilt. They incorporated evidence, researched in the 1980s, which revealed the link between athletes, nutrition and body performance. They learned that loading up on high fat, high carbohydrate foods for 2-3 days increases the body’s metabolism and fat oxidation and prepares it to begin searching for stored fat that has sought hiding places in the cells and dangerously around the internal organs. Because carbohydrate intake is decreased after calorie loading, the body will begin a search for fuel, seeking out this excess fat, forcing it into the bloodstream and quickly flushing it from the system. In their collaboration with scientists and biochemists, Diet Doc has also learned that individual genes are involved with metabolism. These genes are very adaptable and can change how they are expressed very rapidly.  During times of sudden calorie restriction, seen in most weight loss programs, the genes change their expression to, “starvation mode.”  This means that the body becomes extraordinarily stingy and efficient about how it burns calories and uses its options for fuel.  It conserves and saves calories and stores everything possible as fat.   On the other hand, loading with a high fat diet actually changes gene expression in the opposite direction.  A sudden high fat diet will cause the body to produce more metabolic enzymes, shifting the metabolism into “abundance mode.”  Most importantly, the liver spikes its production of certain enzymes which up-regulates all the metabolic pathways in the body to burn fat as fuel.  Important hormones involved in weight control such as insulin, leptin, and adiponectin also make corresponding shifts to burn fat.  When the high fat in the diet is suddenly reduced, the body will remain in this fat burning state for days.  The process is prolonged and fat burning continues if the patient switches to a low carbohydrate ketogenic diet plan immediately following the calorie loading phase. Safe and healthy weight loss is a science. For this reason, Diet Doc has combined the most brilliant minds in the country and have invested decades of scientific research with the most modern medical and nutritional understanding, enabling them to help people in any part of the country improve their physical and emotional health through safe, fast and permanent weight loss. The company has become a leader in the medical weight loss industry and urges those who are struggling to lose that final 10-20 pounds to those who must lose 100 pounds or more to call today to learn how to get in shape without deprivation, guilt or anxiety. Their new calorie loading diet plans are planned perfectly for the holiday season, enabling their patients to enjoy their favorite foods without compromising their weight loss goals.About the Company:

Diabetic Diet Plans Help Diet Doc Patients Stabilize Blood Sugar Levels, Reduce Type 2 Diabetes ...

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 29, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Thousands of Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every day. Many more are diagnosed as pre-diabetic and are urged by their physicians to modify their lifestyle now to prevent full-blown diabetes. And, while some diabetes risk factors are a direct result of family history, advanced age, or belonging to certain ethnic groups, there is one risk factor that people can control – their weight.Because of the obvious link between carrying excess fat and diabetes, medical researchers have begun to take a closer look at the dangerous relationship between food, obesity and diabetes and their effect on the body’s genes. While it is apparent that poor eating habits can change the way in which genes are expressed which can contribute to a higher incidence of weight-related illnesses, it is now also known that positive eating habits and lifestyle changes can actually reverse these effects. In fact, losing excess weight and practicing healthy eating habits commands the list of simple lifestyle changes that can prevent Type 2 diabetes. To understand the link between fat and diabetes, one must first understand fat. The human body houses three types of fat cells and fat tissue, each extremely active and each secreting numerous chemicals that interact with the brain, immune system, pancreas and stomach. Subcutaneous fat is stored in large pockets under the skin, while visceral fat nestles itself dangerously around the internal organs. Intramuscular fat is stored in-between and throughout muscle tissue.Evidence clearly indicates that those who make even minimal lifestyle modifications through diet can significantly change the way in which these fats interact and accumulate in the body. In fact, losing only 7-10% of total body weight can change how genes are expressed and alter which chemicals are produced by fat tissues, in turn, reducing all three kinds of fat while improving insulin levels, blood sugar levels, and A1C levels in patients with Type 2 diabetes. And, the most promising news is that these changes can be sustained over time. Most Type 2 diabetic patients are prescribed medications to control their blood insulin and blood sugar levels.  While weight loss for these patients is almost always recommended by physicians, it should also be medically supervised and monitored.  And, because Diet Doc offers a doctor-designed and medically supervised weight loss program, more and more people throughout the country are turning to the company to control blood sugar and improve diabetic conditions by safely, comfortably and quickly losing excess fat.Because hidden carbohydrates in foods can completely disrupt the weight loss process by keeping the fat burning gates closed and fat storing gates open, and because even small amounts of hidden carbohydrates in everyday foods can change the way in which the body processes and stores fat, successful dieters must know what, why and how to identify hidden carbohydrates in the foods that they consume. Diet Doc patients find it easy to differentiate between good and bad carbohydrates because their diet plans are designed by professional nutritionists to be personal to each patient’s age, gender, lifestyle, and nutritional needs while being compatible with almost any medical condition, including Type 2 diabetes. And, because the Diet Doc team maintains a close relationship with each of their patients throughout their weight loss journey, they are able to monitor progress and are quickly alerted if diet plans need modification. At Diet Doc, patients understand that living with Type 2 diabetes is not a life sentence. This disease does not have to leave them feeling hungry or deprived. The company’s nutritional experts teach patients how to balance healthy food choices that leave them feeling full and satisfied, combined with specially formulated diet products that accelerate weight loss while eliminating the typical dieting side effects that tempt many dieters to reach for unhealthy, high carbohydrate foods.Combining today’s advanced science and modern medical understanding with their doctor-designed and medically supervised diabetic diet plans has enabled Diet Doc to become a nationally recognized leader in the medical weight loss industry and has enabled people across the country to lose excess fat and avoid weight-related illnesses, including Type 2 diabetes.Diet Doc’s diabetic diet plans are tailored to be specific to each patient’s age, gender, shape and size and, specifically, for those who want to control, or even prevent, diabetes by stabilizing blood sugar levels and losing excess weight. Diet Doc urges people from any part of the country to call today to schedule a private and no-cost consultation.About the Company:Diet Doc Weight Loss is the nation’s leader in medical, weight loss offering a full line of prescription medication, doctor, nurse and nutritional coaching support. For over a decade, Diet Doc has produced a sophisticated, doctor designed weight loss program that addresses each individual specific health need to promote fast, safe and long term weight loss.Diet Doc Contact Information:

FODMAP diet may offer relief for chronic digestive problems

So you’ve eliminated the lactose. The fructose. You’ve gone gluten-free. And yet you’re still getting ambushed by those embarrassing bathroom emergencies.

Life should be a gas — not give you it. But many everyday foods containing certain kinds of carbohydrates may be working against you.

“You really have to listen to your body,” said Vivian Serata, clinical nutritionist at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.

For those with patience, determination and a good nutritionist to help out, there is the FODMAP diet, a six-week process-of-elimination program to help people with irritable bowel syndrome and other chronic digestive illnesses figure what exactly they can and cannot tolerate when eliminating things like lactose isn’t enough.

“Patients with irritable bowel syndrome have visceral hypersensitivity in their guts. They are more sensitive to particular foods than others,” said Dr. Bhavik Bhandari, assistant professor of medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and an attending physician at the school’s Crohn’s and Colitis Center.

Eliminating certain types of carbohydrates known as FODMAPs, Australian researchers have found, can sometimes help alleviate stomach problems. FODMAP stands for — get ready now — fermentable oligosaccharides, dissaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols. In short, they are food building blocks that share small-chain sugars and fibers that some people can’t tolerate.

“Our guidelines for irritable bowel syndrome say first go lactose-free and then reduce gas-forming foods. So beans, raisins, … wheat germ, caffeine, that sort of thing. If you eliminate those, and you’re still having symptoms, this clearly requires the elimination of a lot of other food products,” or the FODMAPs, Bhandari said. “Wheat, barley, rye, fruits, apples, mangoes, watermelon, high-fructose corn syrup, apricots, cherries, cauliflower, chewing gum. Essentially, what you do is go on a diet from six to eight weeks and remove all of these high FODMAP foods and then slowly reintroduce them to see what your body is sensitive to. It’s a very broad elimination diet.”

Other FODMAPs prevalent in the American diet include onion, garlic, pears, mushrooms, asparagus, honey and more, according to researchers.

“When these foods are digested, they create specific types of carbohydrates that cannot be absorbed properly. So it drags more water into the intestine, and since they stay in the intestine, they are rapidly fermented by the bacteria in your gut. That’s what leads to the problems,” Bhandari said.

Low-FODMAP foods include almond, coconut, rice, or soy milks; bananas; bell peppers; blueberries; carrots; cucumbers; grapes; oats; potatoes; quinoa; rice; spinach, kale, and other leafy greens; tangerines; and tomatoes, according to nutritionists.

The diet isn’t new. It’s about 10 years old, actually. But Bhandari said more and more patients seem to have become aware of it recently. Does he think it works?

“There is definitely a subset of patients where this diet is very effective. But it should be done with a nutritionist, because it involves eliminating a wide variety of foods and it needs to be closely monitored,” he said. Bhandari noted it is important for those interested in the FODMAP diet to work with a nutritionist or gastroenterologist who can help you limit FODMAPs in conjunction with a balanced diet that still meets all your nutritional needs.

“My opinion is, it can be good for a lot of people, but it takes a certain person to do it,” said Serata. “You are eliminating a lot of foods, then re-introducing them. Ideally, you want to work with a dietitian and that dietitian needs to instruct the patient to keep a diary of what they are eating, to know what food is helping them or not helping them. I think it can help, absolutely. But the person has to be very dedicated.”

Experts estimate that 20 percent of the American population suffers from chronic digestive illnesses like IBS.

Bhandari and Serata both noted that the FODMAP diet is not a weight-loss plan and should not be used for those purposes.

Sam has not disclosed how much he weighs or exactly how many pounds he has lost, but based on before-and-after photo comparisons, Smith appears to have lost between 35 to 50 pounds, Examiner estimated.

In March, Smith revealed he lost 14 pounds in 14 days on a low-carb Paleo-style diet. Sam credited nutritionist Amelia Freer’s detox diet for helping him slim down and improve his health.

sam smith paleo weight loss goal weight“Three weeks ago I met a woman who has completely changed my life,” Sam wrote in March.

“Amelia Freer has helped me lose over a stone in 2 weeks and has completely transformed my relationship with food. Everyone go check out her incredible book Eat Nourish Glow, and start to live healthy.”

Smith underscored that he has not been paid to promote Freer’s book.

Freer, the author of Eat Nourish Glow, advocates a gluten-free Paleo-style diet that consists of high-quality proteins such as organic eggs, free-range chicken and low-starch vegetables.

Amelia Freer avoids dairy, alcohol, processed foods, sugar and grains in her diet, all similar to Paleo principles. Freer promises natural weight loss and improved energy if you follow these simple diet principles.

The Paleo diet is the most popular diet around today and has a huge celebrity following, including Tim McGraw, who lost 40 pounds with the low-carb Paleo diet and CrossFit.

Research suggests the Paleo diet accelerates weight loss, reduces blood pressure, and prevents cancer, diabetes, heart disease, depression, and even Alzheimer’s.

A recent study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates the Paleo diet is twice as effective as other diets for promoting weight loss and reducing belly fat.

The Paleo diet can reduce the risk of heart disease, aid weight loss and prevent disease, said CJ Hunt, executive producer of the documentary The Perfect Human Diet and author of the how-to companion book The Perfect Human Diet.

Former biochemist Robb Wolf, author of The Paleo Solution, said Paleo isn’t a fad diet because it doesn’t emphasize calorie restriction but instead focuses on a healthy balance of protein, vegetables and high-quality fats.

Cardiologist: Ketogenic-Style Wheat Free Diet Reverses Diabetes, Enhances Weight Loss

wheat belly weight lossCardiologist Dr. William Davis said you can reverse diabetes and accelerate weight loss by following a low-carb, wheat-free ketogenic-style diet.

“The majority of diabetes is reversible,” said Dr. Davis, author of the bestseller, Wheat Belly Total Health. “Most people can make the choice to have diabetes or to not have it. This is because it is caused by diet. Sadly, it is caused by conventional advice to ‘cut your fat and eat healthy whole grains.’”

In his practice, Davis observed that patients experienced relief from diabetes, joint pain, heart disease, inflammatory disorders, acid reflux, asthma, migraines and depression by eliminating wheat and sugar from their diets.

“Wheat is a big reason — if not the biggest reason — why Americans are the most overweight population in the history of mankind,” said Dr. Davis, who called wheat poisonous and addictive.

BreadSnickersAccording to Dr. Davis, the wheat we eat today is totally different from the wheat our parents and grandparents consumed because it has been scientifically engineered, Examiner reported.

He said today’s “Frankenwheat” raises your blood sugar more than most candy bars, and noted that two slices of whole wheat bread raises blood sugar higher than 6 teaspoons of sugar.

Blood sugar spikes fuel inflammation, which causes weight gain, belly fat storage, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and cancer

Eliminating wheat, reducing sugar intake and boosting your consumption of healthy fats aids weight loss and prevents depression, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.

“More than sugary foods, grains raise blood sugar to high levels,” said Dr. Davis, who also wrote Wheat Belly 30-Minute (Or Less!) Cookbook.

“The glycemic indexes, for instance, of whole wheat bread, oatmeal, and multi-grain breads are among the highest of all foods. They ensure having high blood sugars.”

Low-carb, wheat-free ketogenic-style diets fuel rapid weight loss and reverse diabetes, said Dr. William Davis.

To ensure healthy blood sugar and optimal health, Dr. Davis suggests consuming a low-carb, high-fat ketogenic-style diet that incorporates plenty of high-quality animal fats, olive oil, coconut oil, vitamin D, magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids.

Dr. William Davis is a proponent of low carb, high-fat diets such as the Paleo, Atkins and ketogenic diets, saying unprocessed saturated fat is healthy.

Obesity expert Dr. Eric Westman agrees. Westman, director of the Duke University Obesity Clinic, has helped hundreds of morbidly obese people lose thousands of pounds and reverse their diabetes and heart disease with a low-carb, high-fat ketogenic-style diet.

Reducing carbs and consuming plenty of healthy fats accelerates weight loss and protects your brain and body, said Dr. Westman, co-author of Keto Clarity.

“I tell my patients not to fear the fat,” said Westman. “Eat lots of fat. There’s no problem with fat.”

'I know the dangers but I want them anyway': The dark truth about diet pills

Pills, hand

Diet pills: buying them online is a growing trend Photo: Rex Features

Two weeks ago, 21-year-old student Eloise Aimee Parry died after taking diet pills she’d bought online.

The drugs contain the highly-toxic substance known as Dinitrophenol or DNP, which is known to have contributed to the deaths of others using it for weight loss.

Eloise’s mother Fiona, 51, has now spoken about the tragedy and warned others to not make the same mistake.

“I didn’t know it at the time, but Ella had bought slimming tablets on the internet. She had taken even more of these ‘slimming tablets’ than recommended on the pack and had no idea just how dangerous they really were.

“She never intended to take her own life. She just never really understood how dangerous the tablets that she took were. Most of us don’t believe that a slimming tablet could possibly kill us.

“DNP is not a miracle slimming pill. It is a deadly toxin. It’s similar to TNT in structure. TNT is an explosive. DNP causes your metabolism to run at an explosive level, with potentially fatal consequences.”

The cause of Eloise’s death will be confirmed by a coroner at a later date, but police are investigating where she bought the pills, which cost around £70 for 100 capsules.

Eloise Aimee Parry who died after taking “diet pills” thought to contain a highly toxic chemical

DNP is dangerous. Back in 2013, Sarah Houston, a 23-year-old medical student, died after taking a combination of antidepressants and DNP, which she had bought online. Eighteen-year-old student and bodybuilder Sarmad Alladin died the same year after taking DNP, as did 18-year-old rugby player Chris Mapletoft.

The full scale of the drug’s damage has not been reported. But a 2011 study published in the American College of Medical Toxicology found 62 deaths attributed to the drug. It also found that deaths increased from 2001 to 2010, which it claims may be due to: “increased availability of DNP over the internet, marketed particularly towards bodybuilders.”

In the UK, it is illegal to sell DNP as a weight loss product, and it is banned for human consumption.

There have been repeated warnings from the NHS and Food Standards Authority (FSA) against using it for weight loss. But the problem is that it’s still sold illegally online, and in the UK it is actually available to buy as a pesticide.

Sarah’s father, amongst other campaigners, has called for DNP to be made illegal to sell in any format – even if it’s not being advertised for weight loss.

“It’s going to be a slow process but hopefully approaching the Home Office to begin with will be the right step and hopefully it will be made illegal,” he said in 2013.

This has not yet happened, and worryingly, the problem seems to be growing.

Professor Jayne Lawrence, chief scientist at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, says: “I think the scale is very large at the moment. You just put ‘weight loss’ into Google and these sites come up. It’s very freely available and that’s why it’s such a problem.”

She explains the particular appeal with DNP is that, unfortunately, it actually works: “The problem is that it’s very effective, because if you take them for eight days, people talk about losing 12 to 14 pounds of weight.

“But it’s also very dangerous. First of all you feel very warm because your metabolism has increased. It’s very uncomfortable and people report feeling horrible, very quickly feeling sick. They can cause death quite quickly.”

Sarah Houston died after taking a combination of DNP and antidepressants (Ross Parry)

The drug is a fat burner, and works by accelerating the metabolism to a dangerously fast level. In 1933, it was considered as a weight loss drug but was quickly withdrawn from the market in America after serious side effects and deaths were reported.

But DNP isn’t even the only ‘fat burner’ available online – according to Lawrence, other compounds reported to have similar effects are ephedrine, caffeine in high doses, capsaicin (found in cayenne pepper) and the amino acids – L-carnitine and L-tyrosine.

“None of these compounds have been proven to work nor indeed have they been safety tested for this use,” explains Professor Lawrence.

At the moment, the only weight loss drug that is classified as a medicine and available on prescription is Orlistat – often sold by brand name Alli. It is a licensed product that has been tested. Unlike fat burners, it works by stopping the fat from being absorbed by the body and is known as a ‘fat binder’.

But there are other products available to buy in the UK in health shops and online, which can contain some of those compounds reported to be dangerous. These products aren’t categorised as medicines, so are not regulated by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency. And, as long as they aren’t advertised with the promise to lose weight, they can be legally sold.

“It’s a bit of a loophole,” says Lawrence. “But herbal ones can be just as dangerous. People think they’re safer but that’s not always the case. Especially if people mix it with other medicine, it can be very dangerous.”

An example of this is raspberry ketone, a ‘natural’ supplement that contains extremely high doses of caffeine and is available in health shops. Last year, 24-year-old Cara Reynolds died after taking an overdose of the pills.

But they are still incredibly popular.

Rebecca Edwards, 30, has spent the last year or so taking Xenical – a prescription medicine containing Orlistat – but now wants to move on to raspberry ketone. She found that Orlistat helped her drop from a size 14 to a 10, but as soon as she stopped taking it, the weight came back on. She also struggled with the side effects, which can include diarrhoea.

It’s why she’s buying raspberry ketone online.

Eloise Aimee Parry

“I have looked into the side effects but it gets to the point where you’re so unhappy in your own body that you’ll try anything,” she tells me. “I have a degree in science and a masters in cellular pathology – I know the consequences. But, at the same time, I’m very unhappy with the way I am and would go for anything.”

Has she thought about Cara Reynolds’s overdose?

“That does scare me. But I wouldn’t say it changes my mind. If you take normal dosage I don’t think it would as bad as that. People need to understand how unhappy we are. I don’t want to see myself like that. I hate mirrors because as soon as I see myself, all I see is disappointment.”

This seems to capture the mood of most people turning to the internet to buy weight loss drugs. It’s particularly worrying in light of a report this week that found more young girls than ever before have emotional and body image issues.

“There’s an obsession particularly among the young with having a beautiful body,” agrees Lawrence. “When you’re younger, you don’t really think these things are going to happen to you. On forums people say, yes you feel s*** taking it – but look at my body.”

So serious are their body confidence issues that not even the very real risk of these drugs can put them off. It’s why Lawrence says she wouldn’t be averse to seeing a legitimate fat burner on sale in the UK, which would help weight loss through an increased metabolism, but would be medically tested and regulated.

“Nothing’s licensed in the UK to burn fat at the moment. It there’s something proven to be safe that will help, then I’d rather people took that then played Russian roulette with their lives.”

Though, of course, the ideal solution would be if people followed official guidelines to lose weight gradually – ideally one to two pounds a week – through a balanced diet and regular exercise.

“The bottom line is everyone wants a shortcut and easy solution,” says Subodh Gupta, founder of Obesity Campaign UK. “But the only way to reduce your weight is a balanced diet and moderate exercise. That’s what will really work in the long term.”

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 19, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Although hCG injections can be a natural, safe and effective method for fast weight loss, prospective dieters are urged to avoid purchasing online hCG injections without a doctor prescription. Because it is illegal to obtain this powerful hormone without a valid doctor prescription, internet sites that promote their sale are typically located outside of the United States where there are no safety guidelines and are offering products that are essentially worthless for weight loss.

Diet Doc is a company that offers complete, all-inclusive diet plans that may include their own pure, prescription hormone diet treatments to generate fast weight loss while helping patients overcome hunger, cravings and fatigue while dieting. Their programs are supervised throughout by their team of doctors, nurses and nutritionists, who work closely with each patient until well after the last ounce of unwanted and unhealthy excess fat has melted from their body.

Diet Doc’s weight loss programs were developed by doctors and combine decades of research with modern medical understanding. The team delves into each patient’s past medical history and current medical conditions to ensure that their pure, prescription hormone diet treatments will help each patient reach their ideal weight without untoward side effects.

New patients can begin by logging onto www.dietdoc.com to complete a health evaluation and scheduling an online consultation with a Diet Doc physician. During the consult, the doctor will review the entire system to uncover issues that may have been overlooked in the past. These issues will be addressed when developing the most effective diet plan for each patient.

Certified nutritionists consider each patient’s age, gender, nutritional needs and medical conditions before creating meal and snack plans that work flawlessly with their prescription hormone diet treatments to seek out and burn stored fat that has accumulated in the belly, hips, thighs and buttocks. This stored fat is forced into the bloodstream to be burned for energy and quickly flushed from the system. The prescription hormone diet treatments are a natural method of weight loss and, when combined with Diet Doc’s uniquely and strategically designed meal and snack plans, turn the body into a fat burning machine resulting in patients losing 20 pounds or more per month.

Diet Doc’s prescription hormone diet treatments and weight loss programs include unlimited access to the experts, as well as weekly checkup calls to monitor progress and assess comfort level and attitude.

Diet Doc tailors diet plans for those of all shapes, sizes and medical conditions and urges those who have struggled to lose excess fat to call today.

Diet And Exercise Aren't Always Enough To Fight Obesity; It Also Has Genetic Roots

Obesity is a massive and growing problem in today’s fast-paced world of instant gratification, but exercise and diet aren’t powerful enough to solve the problem. Researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York discovered genetics play a larger role than previously thought, and published their findings in the journal The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology. It isn’t a simple problem of caloric imbalance that’s responsible for the millions of obese cases throughout the world.

“Although lifestyle modifications may result in lasting weight loss in individuals who are overweight, in those with chronic obesity, body weight seems to become biologically ‘stamped in’ and defended,” said the study’s lead author Dr. Christopher Ochner, assistant professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine, according to CBS News.

Certain genes may make it easier for people to gain weight, as they influence where fat is deposited in the body. Just as genes have the power to make humans faster, stronger, mathematically inclined, or more likely to hit the booze bottle harder than others, they can make us gain weight at different rates and places on the body. The researchers wanted to take a closer look to understand how.

Diet And Exercise Obese Obese people can’t turn to diet and exercise for a solution. Photo courtesy of Shutterstock

“Few individuals ever truly recover from obesity; rather they suffer from ‘obesity in remission,"” Ochner said. “They are biologically very different from individuals of the same age, sex, and bodyweight who never had obesity.”

During the first few months of a weight-loss program or diet, most obese people find rapid success in weight loss. However, the researchers said 80 to 95 percent of them eventually gain the weight back. Their genetic makeup has become so severely altered from years of training the body to eat poorly and survive on minimal physical activity. Once they start losing weight, they must undo years of damage by retraining the body.

Obesity As A Societally Prevalent Disease

There are currently 78.6 million obese adults in America, which is more than one-third the country’s population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This dangerously high number continues to rise, as there are now three times the amount of obese children as there were one generation ago — breeding a whole new nation of unhealthy adults.

Researchers hope this will help strengthen the recently declared definition of obesity as a disease. When the American Medical Association officially recognized obesity as a disease in 2013, it was with the intention of encouraging physicians to treat obesity as an illness while boosting reimbursements for obesity drugs, surgery, and therapy. The obesity policy vote was also adopted to decrease discrimination based on an individual’s genetic information.

The reinforcement of obesity as a disease is built on a carefully constructed argument, but not without cracks in its foundation. The overwhelming majority of obese people have eaten themselves into an unhealthy state coupled with a sedentary lifestyle. Yes, according to research there are some people who are genetically susceptible to weight gain and irregular fat deposits, but like most other gene-related predispositions it can be managed.

NewMeMD: Dramatic weightloss with the HCG diet

MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

NewMeMD is a weightloss and wellness clinic that focuses on treating the patient’s body, as well as the mind, because without changing the mind, long term weight loss will not be possible. NewMeMD offers medical and non-medical weight loss options, lipo-light body contouring, energizing B-12 injections, fat blocking lipotropic injections, body wraps, nutritional supplements, and infrared sauna sessions.

NewMD offers the HCG diet, which Dr. Chykeetra Maltbia says is one of the most asked about programs at her clinic. Here’s more on the diet;

1. What Does HCG Stand For? – HCG stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin.

2. What is HCG? This is a hormone found in both men and women. Women produce a HUGE amount of HCG during pregnancy, which is why HCG is known as the pregnancy hormone.

3. Can Men do The HCG Diet? – Yes, the diet can be used by men or women.

4. Is this diet safe for children? It is safe; however, I recommend that only children who have reached maturity use this diet.

5. How Many Calories Am I Allowed To Eat Per Day? The original HCG Protocol is 500 calories per day. The HCG diet is specific, and you cannot eat just anything that equals 500 calories. You must follow the HCG diet as instructed.

6. How Long Do I Have To Wait Between Rounds 1 and 2? – You must wait 4-6 weeks from your last injection date. However, the amount of time needed between rounds increases the more rounds that you do.

7. Is The HCG Diet Dangerous? – No. It is 100% safe.

8. Should I Stop Using HCG During My Menstrual Cycle? – Yes, especially during your heaviest flow days.

9. If I am still menstruating, when is the best time to start HCG? The day that your cycle ends.

10. Am I More Likely To Get Pregnant On The HCG Diet? – It is not likely, but it may increases your chances somewhat.

11. Will I Be Hungry Eating Only 500 Calories A Day – You may feel a little bit of hunger in the beginning, but that usually goes away within the first few days.

12. How Much Weight Will I Lose On The HCG Diet? – Typically, men lose about 1 pound per day. Woman tend to lose a bit less (1/2 to 1 pound per day).

13. How Long Should I Do The HCG Diet? – It depends on how much weight you want to lose. You can do a 23 day, 30 day, or a 40 day round of HCG. But either way you must continue doing the 500 Calorie Diet for 3 days after you stop taking the HCG.

14. Can I exercise while on the HCG diet? If you are not an avid exerciser at the time of starting HCG, you should avoid any strenuous activity while on the HCG due to the low caloric intact during this time. If you do chose to stay active, you should keep it short and light (i.e. a 15-20 minute walk).

15. Can I Drink Soda on the HCG Diet? – No!

16. Can I eat foods other than those on the HCG diet list? No. Doing so will result in lower weight loss. Follow the diet exactly as outline for maximum weight loss.

17. How long is the maintenance phase, and what can I eat while on it? This phase is typically three weeks. During this time, you avoid starch and sugar (basically eat a clean diet) and can resume a regular exercise routine. It is during the maintenance phase that your metabolism is reset.

18. Do I Have To Do The Calorie Loading (Gorge) Days? – Yes. The calorie loading or gorge days should be done, and if done properly, you will lose a bit more weight than those that do not do them. In addition, the hunger will be dramatically reduced once you start the 500 calorie/day HCG diet.

19. How Many Days Should I Calorie Load? – Dr. Simeons Original Protocol states that you should do 2 calorie loading days. But you can calorie load for 1 or 3 days before starting the 500 calorie HCG diet. Follow the physician’s instructions.

20. Can I do the HCG diet if I have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid disease, or other medical conditions? Yes, the diet is safe for all types of medical conditions. This is one of the reasons why at NewMeMD labs are drawn and an EKG is completed before starting the diet. And before starting the HCG protocol you will be evaluated by the physician.

21. Can I Do the HCG Diet If I Am A Vegetarian? – Yes, although it does tend to be a little bit harder to lose weight.

22. Can I Use the HCG Diet To Lose Just 5 Pounds? – While you can use the diet to lose any amount of weight that you want, it is not recommended using it to lose any less than 15 pounds.

23. Do I Have to do Injections to receive the HCG? – No, there are other ways such as sublingual drops, pellets, tablets, etc. However, we have found that the only way to get the HCG into the bloodstream adequately is via injections, so this is the only method offered at NewMeMD.

24. Will I Gain The Weight Back After The HCG Diet? – If the diet is done correctly and you continue to eat right after completing the diet, you should stay within 2 pounds of your ending weight.

25. Would I not lose weight if I were to eat only 500 calories per day without the HCG? Yes, anyone who consumes only 500 calories/day will lose weight. However, this is not recommended because doing so puts your body into starvation mode. Once this happens, your body will break down muscle in order to survive and hold on to every calorie consumed. HCG works by breaking down your body’s stored fat and releasing it into the bloodstream. This release of fat is what your body survives on while on the HCG diet. Thus, the weight loss on HCG is fat loss without losing muscle or going into ketosis.

26. Will I Lose Weight With The HCG Diet? – Absolutely! If you follow the HCG Diet Protocol you will lose weight.
