HEALTHY HEALING: Nearly 500 turn out for St. Mark's annual health fair in New Albany

NEW ALBANY — James Hagins recently learned that his daughter was in need of eyeglasses.

On Saturday, not only did his daughter, Cheyenne, 11, get new eyewear, but so did Hagins and his other daughter, Alyssa, 9, at St. Mark’s United Church of Christ’s annual health fair in New Albany.

“School called me and said Cheyenne needed to get some glasses because she’s got some major tests coming up next week,” Hagins said, adding that the family enjoyed the fair and would be back. “It’s something good for the kids.”

Hundreds streamed through the halls of St. Mark’s as the church opened its doors to the community for its eighth annual health fair. While the church has been hosting a weekly free meal and clothes closet weekly for years, the comprehensive fair also offers free services across the board, including haircuts, shopping the clothes closet, financial counseling, enjoying a chair massage, dental exams and oral cancer screenings and a lot more.

Visitors could even get checked and fitted for new free glasses. The Rev. John Manzo was available all day for spiritual counseling for anyone who wanted to speak with him.

Some people went for specific services and many made a day of it. Jeffersonville residents Beverly Porter and Ceola Hall spent several hours at the church.

“I got a haircut, I got my eyes checked, my back — I was in a car accident last year and it helped it,” Porter said. She said she talked to a doctor at McCallister Chiropractic to help find alternatives to medicine for her back pain, and got set up with an appointment for next week.

Gretchen Lentz, chiropractic assistant at McCallister, said the company was giving out gift certificates for a free exam, consultation and X-rays for the following week, for those who qualified and were interested.

She said Saturday’s event was the biggest year she’s seen so far, and she’s been coming to the health fair for four years.

“It’s definitely good to get people who can’t go to the doctor because they can’t afford it or just don’t have those connections,” she said. “So we reach out to them and help those people feel better and know why they aren’t feeling good.”

There is also a wealth of health information at the fair: smoking cessation, sexual health eduction, women’s preventive health and plenty of volunteers on hand to help community members get access to continued healthcare.

Joy Knopfmeier, who co-coordinates the annual event with Wendy Swisher, said she wants everyone coming through the doors to be treated as though they were guests in the more than 120 volunteers’ homes. They started the fair eight years ago after seeing the need from folks who were visiting the weekly clothes closet and soup kitchen.

“It’s very humbling to me as well as just sad in a way because you see so much of the need,” Knopfmeier said. “But it really warms my heart that that’s one of the biggest feedbacks that we get is that people feel like they’ve been respected and treated with dignity and that they’re comfortable here.”

Services at the health fair and the weekly clothes closet and soup kitchen are open without restrictions to anyone in the community, Knopfmeier said.

“We are amazed at how many people we get,” she said. “The one thing we will ask is what counties they’re from just so we can kind of get a demographic and if this is their first time. And it always amazes us how many people it’s like their first time at the clothes closet or the soup kitchen or to the church for these and it’s like ‘Great, we’ve reached a few more people then than we did last year.’”

She said this year, there were 100 people in the door when the fair started at 10 a.m, but some showed up even earlier.

“When we got here at 7:30 there were people at the front door waiting, which tells us a little bit about the need,” she said. “They want to make sure that they get what they need. Some folks will come once a year for a haircut so they want to make sure they’re first in the door.”

Knopfmeier estimates that about half of the people that come through access the vision clinic, which is staffed with eye doctors from the area. Adults and children can get their eyes checked and if needed, they can usually leave with a pair of glasses the same day. Waterstep and the Lyons Club are the two main providers of glasses — both readers and prescription. If the person needs a prescription that needs to be ordered, the church pays for it.

James Hagins and his daughters Alyssa, 9, and Cheyenne, 11, New Albany, were at Saturday’s fair for the first time, and all three got glasses.

Hagins said he learned of his daughter’s vision problems from school.

“School called me and said Cheyenne needed to get some glasses because she’s got some major tests coming up next week,” he said.

He said they all had a great time and would be back again.

“Oh yes,” he said. “It’s something good for the kids.”

Pamela Werner, New Albany, was there with her daughter and grandchildren and friends. She said it’s something they look forward to every year.

“It’s something for the kids and something for us to do, instead of being stuck in the house all the time,” she said. “It’s amazing what they do — it’s really helpful to people, too.”

State Rep. Ed Clere, R-New Albany, said the spectrum of services offered at the health fair is unique to St. Mark’s.

“One of the things that distinguishes this health fair is how comprehensive it is,” he said. “There are a lot of events that target one need or a couple of needs but they’re doing everything in one place. It’s really a one-stop-shop.

Knopfmeier said the church is mission-oriented and that most of the congregation was able to volunteer at the event. Although it does receive a $1,000 grant to help with the fair, the church also has fundraisers throughout the year to help make sure it’s a success.

“We’re exhausted at the end of the day but we’re pretty blessed and our hearts are pretty full,” she said.

Miguel, Hottois, 15, volunteered for the first time this year at the fair.

“I like it. I think it’s a neat thing to do,” he said. “I wasn’t planning on doing it but I’m definitely glad that I did.”

Hottois did a little bit of everything — he helped cook, set up, whatever was needed — and got a lot out of the experience.

“You get to learn new things about new people you probably would have never met,” he said. “And you get a good feeling when you help someone.”

Public health and pot, McClintock and environment, Scalia and Constitution, men and prostate ...

Pot health claims exaggerated

Re “Pot initiatives fail to give public health proper priority” (Forum, Another View, Feb. 21): Rachel Barry and Stanton Glantz’s suggestion to reject proposed citizens initiatives based on their personal health findings is flawed and frightening. Marijuana should not be treated similar to tobacco, which kills more than 1,000 Americans daily and causes cancer. It should be treated similar to alcohol and be socially acceptable for responsible adults to use.

The implication that cannabis causes cancer, even though there isn’t one single case of cancer recorded, ignores the facts. Rather cannabis has proven safe, and it’s less addictive than coffee.

Further, legalizing the plant does not suddenly create an “unrestrained marijuana market.” The black market has been unrestrained and thriving for decades. The only difference is, once legalized, citizens force government to regulate the plant rather than forcing the black market to regulate it.

Stan White, Dillon, Colo.

Prioritize health over pot profit

To make a profit, a recreational marijuana industry will need to preserve the product and prolong its shelf life by adding chemicals that will include fungicides and pesticides.

McClintock carries on GOP tradition

Re “McClintock takes gavel, while Yosemite quakes” (Forum, Feb. 21): One of the unanimous agreements signed during the Paris summit on the environment was a pledge to minimize, or eliminate wherever possible, the cutting of forests. Trees are the Earth’s lungs: They absorb carbon dioxide and monoxide, and expel oxygen. McClintock missed school the day they taught this in biology class.

As the article suggests, his motto concerning national forests is “Cut, baby, cut!” McClintock has always been in the pocket of industries that rape the land: lumber, coal, oil, industrial farming. In spite of science and facts, McClintock continues to deny that climate change exists and, as the article shows, does not mind lying to serve his masters.

McClintock chairs the subcommittee that oversees federal lands. This is typically Republican: appoint as chairmen people who aim to destroy the activities they oversee. McClintock carries the GOP tradition of destroying public lands for the benefit of his donors.

John Garon, Placerville

Ho, hum; another McClintock attack

One has to love The Sacramento Bee’s one side fits all policy. Environmental writer Matt Weiser quotes the always fair and objective environmental activist/extremist John Buckley calling Rep. Tom McClintock a liar because they disagree about forest management and what amenities should be available in Yosemite.

The Bee’s contempt for McClintock has been obvious. We get that. Funny how he keeps getting elected.

James W. Rushford,

Sacramento

Have a serious discussion, please

Problems facing national forests and rural communities cannot be so easily solved, nor as easily condemned as Matt Weiser, John Buckley and Bob Johnston indicate in the article regarding Rep. Tom McClintock. From tree mortality to the decrease of revenue in rural counties hindering the ability of school districts to educate children – these problems need real collaborative solutions carried out with integrity and understanding of the best available science.

Finding resolutions involves people meeting with best intentions to pursue answers to these serious issues. The article by Weiser hurts these ongoing efforts and serves no real purpose, except one born of animosity. Many people who are currently working to find the best collaborative solutions agree that hyperbole, condemnation, accusation and vitriol have no place. Too bad The Sacramento Bee chose to publish an unfortunate and juvenile article that harms ongoing efforts and promotes political partisanship.

Amy Granat, Clarksburg

Bringing light to prostate cancer

Re “It’s too late to prevent cancer in his family” (Forum, Feb. 21): We fellow travelers owe prostate cancer victim Gerald Haslam our eternal gratitude for bringing that affliction out of the shadows through the story of his own difficult journey.

Many can now take comfort in knowing that we needn’t suffer in silence or remain relegated to the low end of the cancer victim hierarchy, as we endure the travails of this all-too-common disease.

Spencer P. Le Gate,

Sacramento

Be aware of prostate cancer

As a prostate cancer survivor, I share Gerald Haslam’s advice when he states, “early detection is the key to survival.” All men should be aware that prostate cancer is a deadly disease that kills an American man every 20 minutes.

American Cancer Society’s data indicates that the 5-year survival rate is 100 percent when prostate cancer is detected and treated in its early stage. Unfortunately, when prostate cancer is detected late and it has spread throughout a man’s body, the 5-year survival rate drops to 28 percent.

The California Prostate Cancer Coalition recommends that every man have a baseline PSA test at age 40. For men in a high-risk group, such as the Haslam family, and African Americans, they should have their baseline PSA test at age 35. The PSA test is a simple blood test, which can be conducted in the family doctor’s office.

William Doss, Rocklin

Scalia had a negative impact

Re “Scalia’s impact felt far beyond his written opinions” (Forum, Feb. 21): Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was a champion of the “originalist” or “original intent” interpretation of the Constitution, in reference to the intent of the Founding Fathers. The “original intent” of the authors was that women not have a vote, that it was OK for white people to own black people as property. Things evolve; consciousness and knowledge increase as time passes. Those are good things.

Therefore, the U.S. should not be constrained when creating and administering its laws by the limited knowledge and poor moral standards of the era in which the Constitution was written. Were the Founding Fathers alive today and writing a constitution, their “original intent” would be vastly different than it was in the late 18th century. Some of them might even be Founding Mothers or black people. Most people would think that a good thing.

Richard Vidan, Orangevale

Jefferson provides some context

We cannot discern the “intent” of the Founding Fathers by simply reading groups of words, e.g. “well regulated militia” and “progress of science and useful arts,” absent the reading of published thoughts of the Founders contemporaneously.

An example will suffice. In a letter to James Madison in 1789, Thomas Jefferson wrote: “No society can make a perpetual constitution or even perpetual law. The earth belongs to the living generation; they may manage it, then, and what proceeds from it, as they please, during their usufruct.”

Gary S. Gilbert, Fair Oaks

Water law vs. flood risk

Re “The year drought turned to deluge” (Editorials, Feb. 21): California has a partly broken system for water management for the American River watershed. The editorial described management of flood risks by dumping about three-quarters of the American River’s flow downstream, past Folsom Dam. Another article described a new law requiring $500 penalties for watering lawns soon after rain.

Here in El Dorado County, most of us are required to reduce our consumption of American River water by 28 percent. Can’t upstream consumers of American River water and flood protection both benefit by allowing more consumptive use of this water, instead of less, at this time of year?

Paul Raveling,

El Dorado Hills

Millennials should vote for policies

Re “It’s OK to support Clinton because she’s a woman” (Forum, Feb. 21): Writer Rebecca LaVally, like Madeleine Albright and Gloria Steinem, depicts contempt toward millennials as expected by now from the Clinton campaign. As LaVally writes, “Today many millennials no doubt believe the fight is won and done.”

As a young progressive, I am alarmed that age discrimination is casually tossed out to readers. If LaVally researched the views of millennials, she would find that we care deeply about gender equality. In a 2013 Pew Research Center survey, three-quarters of millennial women believed gender inequality exists in the workplace, on par with baby boomers and more than Generation X.

I read LaVally’s piece as an assault on my generation and, personally, me. Essentially, LaVally is shaming us into ignoring policy proposals, and I hope fellow millennials vote for their policy preferences.

Benjamin Brumer, Woodland

These women aren’t for Clinton

Re “Clinton and women voters” (Forum, Drawing Board, Feb. 14): News flash to Hillary Clinton, Gloria Steinem and Madeline Albright: None of the women in my family will be in hell, but we are definitely not voting for Hillary Clinton. We are weary of them claiming they speak for all women. We are women, proud of it and value all women and their rights, especially those in the womb who cannot speak for themselves.

Carmichael

Stomach flu has upside: weight loss

Published: Sunday, February 28, 2016, 12:01 a.m.

You know you’re sick when the bathroom floor seems like the best place to sleep. That’s exactly where I was a couple of weeks ago, with a roll of toilet paper as my pillow. I prayed to the porcelain goddess so hard that my husband brought me a sleeping bag because crawling back to the couch was too difficult.

The stomach bug had bit our kids two days before. My son escaped fifth-grade humiliation by his quick-thinking teacher, who sent him off into the hall with a trash can just in time. (No word yet on whether or not the school has bought her a new wastebasket.) The principal found him on the stairs, struggling toward the office.

My daughter woke up Thursday night and made my husband and I give thanks to the universe that our washing machine was working again. I cleaned the same load of bedding three times. With bleach.

“It’s been two days,” I told my husband on Saturday morning. “We’re not sick yet, so maybe we’re immune.”

“Shh!” he knocked on the wooden kitchen table. “Don’t jinx us.”

A few hours later I developed a headache. Then I felt a bit achy. After that, my body propelled me through the worst possible weight-loss regime known to man. My husband reported that at one point I deliriously mumbled about Tamiflu and God, but I don’t remember any of that.

When I finally crossed over to the other side 24 hours later and could once again form complete sentences, my husband gave me devastating news. Our pet fish, Princess Rip-Jaws, was dead. It was either a cruel coincidence, or evidence of our family being cursed.

I was unable to attend Princess Rip-Jaws’ funeral. The thought of fish and sewers in general was more than I could stomach. I plugged my ears when I heard the flush, but did listen to the solemn blessing for her new life with Nemo.

By Monday evening I was back in full communion with the couch, watching Netflix and bravely drinking Gatorade. My husband tried to force-feed us pancakes, and my daughter and I flatly refused to eat. My son took a few bites to be polite, and then joined our protest. The smell of melting butter was so strong that breakfast-for-dinner seemed evil.

Tuesday morning when my husband left for work I implored him. “If you start to feel sick, come home early.” The poor guy had taken care of all three of us, disinfected the entire house, and done multiple loads of laundry. He looked worn out.

I, on the other hand, felt reborn. I enjoyed toast with honey for breakfast. I took a shower and it felt like heaven. I dug around my closet for my old skinny jeans, and was delighted they were now a perfect fit.

Then I headed back to the couch. After all, there wasn’t any need to push it.

The wealthier you are, the more you chase well-being, says survey

A recent survey on women’s health across five countries, including India, has confirmed what we’ve known all along: that wealth and well-being go hand in hand. It reports that 98% of those who are financially secure claim to actively pursue a sense of well-being compared to the 65% in lower income groups. The study titled ‘Women’s health and wellbeing: Evolving definitions and practices’ covered 453 women and 100 public officials across India, Brazil, Mexico, France and Germany.

The recently released survey was sponsored by the consumer health division of pharmaceutical company Merck and conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit. The project looked specifically at women’s responses to goals on health and wellbeing. The notion of wellbeing included factors other than physical health —work-life balance, education and skills, income, social connections, civil engagement, personal security, housing, environmental quality and subjective wellbeing. (By dint of its method of data-collection —via online questionnaires — the survey preselects a middleand-higher-class sample, at least in the Indian context.)

In an attempt to extend the horizons of personal health to holistic well-being (a Sustainable Development Goal), the survey tried to understand what ‘wellbeing’ meant to women across cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. To 64% of the respondents, wellbeing was associated with feeling healthy and physically fit, a correlation made by 74% of public officials who work on government programmes aimed at women’s health and well-being. They conflated lack of illness with wellness, discounting social or psychological pressures as inhibitors to holistic health.

Then again 23% said ‘feeling well’ was feeling optimistic about their own future as well as that of their family, an association made by only 3% of public officials. This mismatch between the perception of women and policy-makers around wellness suggests how health policies can be better calibrated.

The survey revealed a further incongruity between the kind of health programmes desired by women, and what was officially on offer: 48% said they’d like programmes related to hobbies and cultural activities, but 73% of health officials rooted for illness prevention programmes. “Women are often the caretakers of their families and educate them on health and wellbeing,” said Uta Kemmerich-Keil, CEO of Merck’s consumer health business. “They also represent the majority of professionals in health care occupations, so they have the broadest impact on improving health and well-being in our societies.”

The survey showed that women in India (95%) and Brazil (86%) claimed to be most active in trying to ensure asense of personal well-being. They defined well-being as the avoidance of unhealthy activities like smoking or drinking, rather than a proactive commitment to exercise or a healthy diet. The survey also found a gap between women’s stated practice of healthy living and the actual fact: Brazilian women spent more heavily on beauty products and treatments than on their health, showing that beauty overrode health. Wellbeing apparently includes building and maintaining good family relations, vital to emotional stability.

However, Sanghita Bhattarcharya, senior public health specialist at the Public Health Foundation of India — a participant in EIU’s interview programme — pointed out that beyond a narrow elite, there’s little hope about Indian women actively managing their wellbeing. “Public health policy has paid little attention to the wellbeing of women beyond their reproductive years,” she said. “This in itself is a manifestation of gendered expectations, where even decision-makers have not looked at women beyond their roles as mothers and care-givers.”

5 unusual health tips that will help burn fat

Here are some avant-garde habits that will help you drop weight more efficiently

There’s a good possibility that torching fat and building a lean frame is one of your life goals. And most of us already know the basics of how to achieve that: working out on a regular basis, getting the heart racing and eating clean to boost metabolism. But that’s not all!

Compiled from bodyandsoul.com.au, authoritynutrition.com and Men’s Fitness, here are some avant-garde habits that will help you drop weight more efficiently.

Reach out for the ‘achaar’

Did you know that pickle or achaar made by your dadi is a superfood? Surprise! A healthy gut indicates an efficient metabolism. Therefore, eating pickled foods that are high in probiotics will keep your digestive system functioning properly, enhance your immune system and reduce inflammation. For a daily dose of probiotics, eat achaar, preferably one that’s not brimming with unhealthy oils. Try adding pickles to your diet for a few days, every week. If achaar isn’t your thing, you can try fermented foods like kimchi, or foods that contain active cultures, like yoghurt.

Eat. More. ‘Gosht’.

Eating more food, such as red meat, to lose fat might sound counter-intuitive, but it’s a lesser known fact that red meat comprises conjucated linoleic acid (CLA) which decreases body fat and increases lean mass. In the quest of a slim figure, you might run into this dilemma of restricting your food intake. The result: your metabolism will go sluggish, making the weight loss expedition a bit more problematic. So, how do you crack this issue? Eat more meat — be it beef or mutton, chicken or fish — it’ll all help fire up your fat burn. If you aren’t a carnivore, daal, chickpeas and beans are great alternatives.

Exploit the cherry season

The cherry crop in Pakistan is always short-lived so make use of this superfruit. Cherries and cherry juice are not just utterly delicious, but also offer great benefits for cardiac and digestive health. Furthermore, studies suggest that tart cherry juice can help improve muscle recovery and sleep quality — a chief factor in maintaining muscle growth and losing body fat since it helps the body repair itself. Try drinking a cold glass of tart cherry juice before going to bed to speed up muscle recovery, lose fat and reduce inflammation.

Put ‘daar cheeni’ in your ‘chai’

Chai and coffee are great pre-workout energy boosters with a bunch of health benefits but people often wreck the healthful effects by loading up their morning (or afternoon, or evening) cuppas with unwholesome junk like creamer, sugar, or artificial sweeteners. Here’s a better idea. Grab some cinnamon or daar cheeni. Studies suggest that cinnamon has antihyperglycemic properties, which basically means it can help regulate blood sugar levels that are, in fact, crucial for staying fit and burning all that excess fat.

Retune the radio

Doing something different every day — even as little as simply switching radio stations and listening to new songs or discussing something new shakes you out of your routine and can help kick bad habits, says Professor Ben Fletcher, a psychologist at Hertfordshire University. “Deeply engrained habits of thinking and behaviour keep us doing things that are bad for us, like smoking and eating too much needlessly or becoming stuck in negative thought patterns — all of which impacts our health,” he adds. “We can make our lives better and fitter with very small changes.” So, if you wish to win the battle of the bulge, maybe tweak a habit or two and put those sneakers to use.

Partner notification feasible and effective in African settings

Peter Cherutich of the Kenyan Ministry of Health and the University of Washington presented the findings of a cluster randomised trial, conducted at 18 rural and urban voluntary counselling and testing facilities across Kenya. One in twenty Kenyans are living with HIV but half are not aware of their infection.

The researchers aimed to find out whether providing partner services to sexual partners of people newly diagnosed with HIV could result in more sexual partners getting tested and linked to medical care.

In the nine facilities randomised to receive the intervention, counsellors were trained to deliver partner notification services. This involved collecting a detailed sexual history from individuals who were newly diagnosed with HIV and asking them for permission to contact sexual partners from the past three years. Women at risk of intimate partner violence were not asked for details of their partners.

Healthcare workers contacted the partners by phone within 48 hours. They engaged the partner in a discussion about their sexual health but did not disclose that the person was being approached because their name had been given by a sexual partner – early experience showed that some people would insistently ask to know who the index case was.

Staff encouraged the partner to attend a convenient testing facility. When this was not possible, staff arranged to meet the partner and carried out an HIV test themselves. If the partner tested positive, support with linkage to care was provided.

In the nine facilities randomised to the control arm, provision of partner notification was delayed for six weeks. In the meantime, newly diagnosed individuals were encouraged to disclose to their partners and advise them to get tested.

Even 5% Weight Loss May Control Diabetes and Heart Disease in

Just 5% of body weight loss could take obese a long way to fight type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. Acting on this insignificant proportion could play significant role in lives of people suffering from obesity. This is a new finding by researchers from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.

Earlier, it was suggested to reduce body weight by about 5 to 10% for good health. But now, the experts recommend something else. “Five percent is really a very reasonable goal for most obese patients to achieve, it’s much easier than 10%”, said senior author Dr. Samuel Klein of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.

For the study, the researchers put 40 participants on goals to either reduce their body weight by 5, 10 or 15%, or to stay at their current body weight. There were 19 participants, out of 20, to be able to achieve the target of 5% weight loss. Some of them even reduced more than that. The average weight of participants was about 106 kg, which was reduced to 100.8 kg after achieving the target of 5%.

After the experiment, the participants were tested for diabetes and heart disease risk. Participants, who maintained their body weight, underwent test after six months, while the group which reduced body weight by 5% were tested after four months. For reducing 11% and 16% of the weight, tests were conducted after six and 11 months respectively.

The results of the tests disclosed the facts that people who targeted 5% of their body weight were able to reduce overall fat mass. In those people, there was improvement in function of the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Improvement was also seen in sensitivity of their liver and muscle to the effects of the hormone insulin. Reduction in weight by more than 5% could improve these functions even more, as per the study.

Forbes News reported that, they also had improvements in glucose levels, triglyceride (blood fat) levels, heart rate, systolic blood pressure and the hunger hormone leptin. The 5% weight loss did not affect cholesterol levels, either “good” or “bad” varieties.

“These results demonstrate you get a large bang for your buck with a 5% weight loss,” said study author Samuel Klein. “Based on these findings, we should reconsider changing current obesity practice guidelines to stress a target goal of 5% weight loss, rather than 5% to 10% weight loss, which increases the perception of failure when patients do not achieve weight losses that are greater than 5%.”

ExaminerGazette news report said, although scientists hypothesize that increased inflammation in fat tissue contributes to metabolic problems such as insulin resistance, this study found that the metabolic function could improve while markers of inflammation remain unchanged.

“Our findings demonstrate that you get the biggest bang for your buck with five percent weight loss”, says Samuel Klein, professor of medicine and nutritional science and chief of the geriatrics and nutritional science division at Washington University in St. Louis. But until now, there has been little research into the effects of losing 5% rather than 10%, which is tougher to achieve.

According to the HuffingtonPost News, Good news for anyone who is obese and trying to get healthier: Losing just 5 percent of your body weight can lead to significant improvements in insulin sensitivity, which can reduce the risk of major health issues like Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, according to a study published Monday in the journal Cell Metabolism.

“Even though five percent weight loss may not have dramatic cosmetic benefits, it does have significant health benefits,” said the study’s author, Dr. Samuel Klein, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at Washington University School of Medicine. “You’re much healthier on the inside, and it’s a really reasonable and legitimate target for people with obesity.”

Ohio Gov. John Kasich signs bill to cut funding to Planned Parenthood in Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Gov. John Kasich on Sunday signed a bill intended to block Planned Parenthood from receiving funding for services it provides in health clinics around the state, although the new law would have no impact on abortion services.

The bill, sponsored by Democratic Rep. Bill Patmon of Cleveland and Republican Rep. Margaret Conditt of Butler County, forbids the state from contracting for health services with any entity that performs or promotes non-therapeutic abortions.

That Kasich signed the bill is no surprise. As Ohio has wrestled with regulating abortion over time, Kasich has voiced his anti-abortion stance. He has publicly supported the idea of defunding Planned Parenthood in Ohio while campaigning for the Republican nomination for president.

His office announced the action without further comment.

Whether the bill ever takes effect remains to be seen. With the governor’s signature, the bill would become law in 90 days.

But nationally, Planned Parenthood has fought other defunding attempts. In several cases the courts have set those laws aside as unconstitutional, most recently in Utah.

Kasich’s action drew harsh criticism from Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of American and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

“This legislation will have devastating consequences for women across Ohio. John Kasich is proudly eliminating care for expectant mothers and newborns; leaving thousands without vital STD and HIV testing, slashing a program to fight domestic violence, and cutting access to essential, basic health care,” Richards said in a statement.

The bill redirects about $1.3 million in state-directed grants from Ohio’s 28 Planned Parenthood centers to federally qualified health centers, health departments, and other facilities that don’t perform elective abortions or contract with organizations that do. It also earmarks $250,000 from Medicaid funding for community health centers only.

Ohio Right to Life, the state’s leading anti-abortion organization, argued the bill was necessary because the money helped Planned Parenthood pay for staff and clinic costs, helping to keep them operating, even if it was not used directly for abortion.

Planned Parenthood clinics use the funding addressed in the bill to pay for HIV and cancer screenings, sexual health education programs, and infant mortality prevention, among other health services.

It represents about 5 percent of the organization’s statewide budget, according to Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio and its largest affiliate, Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio.

Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio CEO Stephanie Kight has said the cuts will not force the organization to close clinics or stop providing abortion services and they will try to replace funding for the affected programs.

The push for this bill was fueled by secretly-recorded videos released last summer that purported to show Planned Parenthood employees in other states selling aborted fetuses and fetal parts.

Planned Parenthood denied any wrongdoing and an investigation by Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine did not find Ohio clinics sold fetal tissue. But lawmakers were not dissuaded, even after a Texas grand jury in January found no wrongdoing by the abortion provider and instead indicted the anti-abortion activist who filmed the videos.

Later that same week, Republicans in the Ohio Senate approved the bill, with some changes, sending it back to the Ohio House. Republicans in that chamber approved the bill earlier this month.

Ohio Democratic Party Chairman David Pepper, in a statement Sunday, also criticized Kasich and Republicans for the legislation.

“With his decision today to sign House Bill 294, Governor Kasich has finally answered the question of whose side he’s really on,” Pepper said in the statement. “Rather than listen to the majority of Ohioans who oppose defunding Planned Parenthood, Kasich decided to take sides with radical extremists who were recently indicted on felony charges.”

The Star/ANN

The 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy once said: “History is a relentless master. It has no present, only the past rushing the future. Try to hold fast is to be swept aside.”

Indeed “the past is rushing the future”, and at the blink of an eye, the festivities of the Christmas, New Year and the Lunar Chinese New Year have ended. We are all ushered into 2016 and will face the challenges that have been predicted for this Year of the Monkey.

Many of us are embracing ourselves with the possibilities of higher costs of living and potential economic downturns, perhaps by tightening the purse-strings and being cautious in expenditure. However, others may face the hardship that is not so predictable, such as in the alteration of the state of health, with advancing age.

The American comedian, dancer and singer, Eddie Cantor, once said: “Slow down and enjoy life. It is not only the scenery you miss by going too fast- you also miss the sense of where you are going and why”.

This week we tackle the challenges of a reader facing the problems of “inability to slow down” in sex with advancing age.

Dear Dr G,

My name is Albert and I am 54 years old.

I face a rather strange problem in the bedroom in the last three years, and really hope you can help me.

My wife and I have been married for the last 25 years and we have a “normal” sex life.

Sadly, I started having the problems of inability to hold back my ejaculation in the recent years.

I read up in the Internet and wonder is this is the condition called premature ejaculation. I often thought it is a young man’s disease, and I am rather curious why this is happening to me at this age.

Am I am getting this problem because I am too active or inactive in my sex life in the past few years?

The early ejaculation is really bothering my wife and I. Is there any treatment available? Are there risks involved?

Are there any other reasons why I get premature ejaculation at this age?

Am I not too old to be too fast?

Looking forward to your answers.

Regards,

Albert

According to the International Society of Sexual Medicine (ISSM), premature ejaculation (PE) is a medical condition characterised by a man having the inability to control his ejaculation, resulting in short latency time of intercourse (around one minute) and causing significant bothersome or impairment of the quality of life.

Many clinicians and sexual health physicians argue Premature Ejaculation is the commonest form of sexual dysfunction, compared to other conditions such as erectile dysfunction (ED).

The prevalence studies conducted in many countries, including Asian nations revealed that PE affects up to one in three men. Studies in the past indicate PE affects men from the incidence of their first sexual encounter and persists throughout their lives.

Such condition is believed to be due to the deficiency in the neurotransmitters in the brain, such as serotonin. Hence, this may explain why men get life-long PE or primary premature ejaculation.

In recent years, clinicians and scientists begin to investigate another group of sufferers who face the problems of early ejaculation in the advancing age, typically in the 50s. So, there is no such thing as too old to be too fast.

Researchers in the field of sexual health belief the etiology of such acquired PE (or secondary PE) is very different from the life-long PE.

Recent data had revealed the association of men with acquired PE with the possibility of prostate diseases, hormonal changes or even erectile dysfunctions. Many men may feel guilty about over indulgence (or even under-utilisation) in sex as the cause of sexual dysfunction. There is no real evidence to support the hypothesis.

The link between the onset of the inflammation of the prostate resulted in PE has been scrutinised in recent years. Although the exact mechanism of the conditions is largely unknown, many speculate that the local irritation of the pelvic organ may trigger the onset of early ejaculation. Other areas of research in this field include the association of men with hyperthyroidism and acquired PE. Again, the causative or effect of such link is hotly debated, and this has opened up further research avenues for better understanding of many sexual dysfunctional conditions.

Although the etiology and causative factors of the acquired PE remains a subject of scientific scrutiny, the treatment of both primary and secondary premature remains essentially the same.

Occasionally, the treatment of the underlying problems such as prostatitis or hyperthyroidism may resolve the issues. Otherwise, the pharmaceutical intervention to enhance the levels of serotonin in the brain also plays a vital role in the treatment of men with early ejaculations in the advancing years.

Patients who are treated with medications such as Depoxetine can benefit from better control and prolonged ejaculatory latency interval during sexual intimacy. Of course, with such improvement, the quality of life of the couples will enhance accordingly.

The American poet, playwright and social activist, Langston Hughes once said: “Hold fast to dreams, for it dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.”

Dr G’s advice is, “Old bird that flies fast may not necessary be a good thing. Hold fast to treatment when faced with problems, as life should be like a carefree bird flying high and slow!”

Omaha runs for women's heart health

On Feb. 11 The American Heart Association partnered with Go Red for Women to host Omaha’s 3rd annual Omaha Metro Red Dress Dash. The dash consisted of a half-mile jog, walk or sprint, beginning at the Union Pacific Building and ending at DJ’s Dugout, where a celebration was held including healthy snacks and a cash bar.

The event was held free of charge to all participants. Its purpose was to raise awareness for women’s heart health.

Men, women and children of all ages came out for the dash and participants were encouraged to wear either a red dress or red clothing over their winter clothes.

Douglas Street to Capitol Street — where the dash took place — were shut down during this time to ensure the safety of the runners.

Although the dash was free of charge, participants were required to fill out a waiver available to them via the American Heart  Omaha  website. The site also  encouraged those interested to donate to the American Heart Association online.

Registration was available at the dash as well and participants or observers could make donations at the registration table.

“Heart disease is still the No. 1 killer of women, taking the life of 1 in 3 women each year,” according to Omaha’s Go Red for Women website.

Because of the prominence of this problem, Red Dress Dashes have been popping up all over the nation, with locations in Kansas City, Missouri; Lincoln, Chicago and Fort Wayne, Indiana, among other cities.

High-profile figures at the dash included Alyssa Howell, winner of the Miss Nebraska 2015 title and  former Creighton student and member of Pi Beta Phi, Nebraska Gamma chapter.

The biggest Creighton presence at the dash, however, was Creighton’s Alpha Phi, Theta Delta Chapter whose philanthropic focus includes women’s heart health awareness. Although they were not required to attend, more than 20 members of the chapter volunteered to go early and set up the venue before the dash began and around 30 others participated in the dash itself.

“This means a lot to me personally, because heart disease runs in my family, so our philanthropic efforts are something I hold close to my heart,” said College of Professional Studies class of 2017 student and member of Creighton’s Alpha Phi chapter, McKenna Pearson via email interview.

“Since it was in such a prominent part of the city, people came up to us after we ran and asked why we were running,” said Sawyer Danner-Sack — a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences who is also a member of Creighton’s Alpha Phi Chapter — of the exposure it gave women’s heart health.

“[…] so it raises awareness I think, more than anything, for the cause,” Danner-Sack said of the dash.

Sugar Crush: How to Reduce Inflammation, Reverse Nerve Damage, and Reclaim Good Health

What Grain Brain did for wheat, this book by a leading peripheral nerve surgeon now does for sugar, revealing how it causes crippling nerve damage throughout the body—in our feet, organs, and brain—why sugar and carbohydrates are harmful to the body’s nerves, and how eliminating them can mitigate and even reverse the damage.

Sugar Crush exposes the shocking truth about how a diet high in sugar, processed carbohydrates, and wheat compresses and damages the peripheral nerves of the body, leading to pain, numbness, and tingling in the hands and feet, along with a host of related conditions, including migraines, gall bladder disease, and diabetes. If you suffer from ailments your doctors can’t seem to diagnose or help—mysterious rashes, unpredictable digestive problems, debilitating headaches, mood and energy swings, constant tiredness—nerve compression is the likely cause.

Over the years, Dr. Richard Jacoby has treated thousands of patients with peripheral neuropathy. Now, he shares his insights as well as the story of how he connected the dots to determine how sugar is the common denominator of many chronic diseases. In Sugar Crush, he offers a unique holistic approach to understanding the exacting toll sugar and carbs take on the body. Based on his clinical work, he breaks down his highly effective methods, showing how dietary changes reducing sugar and wheat, coinciding with an increase of good fats, can dramatically help regenerate nerves and rehabilitate their normal function.

Sugar Crush includes a quiz to assess your nerve damage, practical dietary advice, and the latest thinking on ways to prevent and reverse neuropathy. If you have diabetes, this essential guide will help you understand the dangers and give you the tools you need to make a difference beyond your doctor’s prescriptions. If you have the metabolic syndrome or prediabetes, or are just concerned about your health, it will help you reverse and prevent nerve damage.

Sugar Crush: How to Reduce Inflammation, Reverse Nerve Damage, and Reclaim Good Health

Here's why leafy green vegetables are key for good digestion

For the first time, scientists have figured out how an unusual type of sugar found in green, leafy vegetables feeds the ‘good’ bacteria living in our guts to aid digestion, while blocking off the ‘bad’ bacteria that can make us sick.

Known as sulfoquinovose (SQ for short), it’s the the only known sugar molecule to contain sulphur, and that’s important – sulphur is the third most abundant mineral in the body, and is one of the vital amino acids used to create proteins for cells and tissues, plus many crucial hormones, enzymes, and antibodies.

“Sulphur is critical for building proteins, the essential components of all living organisms,” said one of the researchers, Spencer Williams from the University of Melbourne in Australia. “SQ is the only sugar molecule which contains sulphur, and ‘digestion’ of the molecule by bacteria releases sulphur into the environment, where it re-enters the global ‘sulphur cycle’ to be reused by other organisms.”

SQ is produced by all green plants to facilitate photosynthesis, and the greener the plant, the more it contains. According to Rae Johnston over at Gizmodo, each year, leafy green vegetables around the world produce the sugar on a scale comparable to the world’s total annual iron ore production.

The only problem? Humans can’t digest it. “No one had any idea where it went or what happened to it when the plant died,” lead researcher, Ethan Goddard-Borger from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne, told The Sydney Morning Herald. “But it is actually being used by bugs that live in the gut to promote their growth, which is a good thing for you.”

While scientists have known about SQ’s presence in leafy greens, such as spinach, broccoli, kale, and parsley, for many years, for the past five decades, no one’s been able to figure out how bacteria in our gut extract it from the vegetables to use as an energy source.

Now the Australian team has identified a previously unknown enzyme called YihQ that bacteria use to isolate, absorb, and metabolise these sulphur-containing sugars..

“Bacteria in the gut, such as crucial protective strains of E. coli, use SQ as a source of energy. E. coli provides a protective barrier that prevents growth and colonisation by bad bacteria, because the good bugs are taking up all the habitable real estate,” Goddard-Borger explains in a press release.

E. coli is a key bacterial coloniser needed by our gut. We speculate that consumption of this specific molecule within leafy greens will prove to be an important factor in improving and maintaining healthy gut bacteria and good digestive health.”

Not only does the discovery, published in Nature Chemical Biology, solve a 50-year-old mystery about how one of the most abundant sugar molecules in the world gets recycled from plant to plant, it opens up the possibility of an entirely new class of antibiotics.

Because harmful bacteria – such as food-poisoning culprit, Salmonella – also metabolise this sugar, the team suggests that SQ-based antibiotics could be developed that specifically attract certain types of pathogens and kill them from the inside-out. And if there’s one thing we need right now, it’s new kinds of antibiotics.

This Utah Senator Wants Pornography Recognized as a "Public Health Crisis"

On the heels of the CDC declaring that #yesallwomen who aren’t on birth control should avoid alcohol, because it causes pregnancy, STDs, and violence (correlation not totally clear), another state resolution out of Utah seems to be hammering the point that the government is excellent at vilifying sex to distract from real issues of public health.Utah State Senator Todd Weiler (R) introduced a resolution to classify porn as a “public health crisis” that needs addressing in an effort to “recognize the need for education, prevention, research, and policy change at the community and societal level in order to address the pornography epidemic that is harming the people of our state and nation.”

One of the key points on his list of grievances with porn is that it is “linked to lessening desire in young men to marry, dissatisfaction in marriage, and infidelity.” Really? First of all, what mysterious force is porn exerting exclusively on young men that isn’t also reaching young women? Second of all, perhaps young men are experiencing a dissatisfaction in marriage because they’re are realizing that government-incentivized monogamy via tax subsidy is kind of creepy and invasive, not to mention an inherently classist, and therefore racist, construct rooted in the subjugation of women. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Another point he makes in the resolution is that porn “equates violence towards women and children with sex and pain with pleasure, which increases the demand for sex trafficking, prostitution, child sexual abuse images, and child pornography.” Again, what dark holes of the internet is Senator Weiler browsing? Because your average casual Pornhub consumer is definitely not accessing child porn. Porn is a legitimate business, a big one, and companies strive to keep their product aboveboard and legal.

Second of all, equating pain with pleasure is not the mark of a public health crisis, nor something that — last I checked — is or can be legislated. It’s the mark of an utterly common sexual preference that ethical, educated, consenting adults know how to navigate without affecting the public health.

Just about the only thing that Senator Weiler got right on his resolution (grammatical error aside) is that “exposure to pornography often serves as childrens’ [sic] and youths’ sex education and shapes their sexual templates.” This is very true! The internet gives us incredibly convenient access to information we may otherwise find difficult to access in our daily lives. For the children and youths, this means when they have questions about sex — and their classrooms, teachers, libraries, and parents aren’t answering them — they can turn to the internet, which yes, hosts porn, for answers.

It is definitely problematic to shape one’s sex education around mainstream porn. But the solution to that problem is not to pin porn as a public health crisis; it’s to advocate for better, comprehensive, medically accurate, inclusive sex ed in schools. The irony, as Mic points out, is:

“Utah is one of 31 U.S. states that does not require schools to teach comprehensive sex education, and parents must “opt in” to schools’ sex education programs by signing permission slips to allow their children to take the class.”

Like the CDC telling sexually active women not to drink, instead of lobbying for more accessible birth control options or better consent education, the state of Utah blaming porn for its shoddy sex ed is distracting from the real problems at hand, which actually have very practical solutions. Then again, the last time we had a wide-scale, deadly sexual health crisis, the government literally ignored it for six years, so maybe this is a step forward after all.
