Women’s College Hospital (WCH) and Women’s College Hospital Foundation (WCHF) today announced the launch of an unprecedented new innovation partnership with leading Canadian real estate company Dream, marked by a major donation of $1 million. The gift is jointly pledged by Dream and Michael J. Cooper, the company’s founder & CEO, to help build the Hospital of the Future – Women’s College Hospital’s state-of-the-art new home at 76 Grenville Street in Toronto.

Ed Clark, WCH Foundation honorary chair, said this is more than a generous financial donation; it’s an evolving partnership that sets a precedent for a new type of relationship between businesses and charities.

With their combined pledge of support, Michael Cooper and Dream are together bringing Women’s College Hospital towards completion of its redevelopment project, scheduled for fall 2015. The opening of the new hospital facility strengthens Women’s College Hospital’s position as a world leader in the health of women. The new hospital expands on WCH’s mandate of providing exemplary ambulatory (outpatient) care and health system solutions to solve some of the most pressing challenges facing our healthcare system.

Michael Cooper wanted to partner with Women’s College Hospital just four minutes into his first-ever tour of its nearly-complete new building.

The session featured Dr. Danielle Martin, WCH’s vice-president of medical affairs and health system solutions, and Dr. Onil Bhattacharyya, Frigon Blau Chair in family medicine research at WCH and a senior scientist at Women’s College Research Institute, one of the only hospital-based research institutes in the world focused on women’s health.

Brigham and Women's, Rock Health team on digital innovation

Brigham and Women’s Hospital is teaming up with investment fund company Rock Health to bring digital health innovations to the hospital.

The three-year-long partnership will start this summer and will consist of collaborations with professionals in digital health to create tools to transform care delivery, according to a Boston Business Journal article.

In addition, Lesley Solomon, executive director of the Brigham Innovation Hub at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said the hospital hopes Rock Health might also look at investing in the its own technology.

“I’m excited,” she told the Journal. “For me, Rock Health is a thought leader in the digital space. They have demonstrated that they are committed to helping Brigham entrepreneurs tackle the biggest problems in healthcare.”

Some of the initiatives that will be worked on surround cloud technologies, apps and software platforms, and telemedicine, according to the article.

Innovation in the healthcare world has often been put on the back-burner, but that is starting to change as more startups and health organizations push money into creating new digital health tools.

Investors pumped a record $6.5 billion into digital health ventures during 2014, an increase of 125 percent from the 2013 level, according to StartUp Health’s annual report released in January.

Dr. David Bates, the innovative entrepreneur at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, has been appointed as the organization’s new senior vice president and chief innovation officer.

The role represents a new direction for the organization, following in the footsteps of others like Boston Children’s Hospital in the development of a chief innovation officer, a position intended to foster a culture of innovation and drive transformative change at the hospital and in health care more broadly.

Bates is well suited for the role. Having previously served as the chief quality officer at the hospital, Bates has focused on patient safety and quality improvement, conducting research and innovating in clinical areas.

“”Innovation is at the core of our academic mission,” said Dr, Elizabeth Nabel, president of Brigham and Women’s Health Care. “Dr. Bates brings a depth and breadth of experience in this area, and under his leadership, the Brigham will support innovation and collaboration to help solve the important and difficult health care challenges of today and tomorrow.”

Most recently, Bates helped create and implement a new tablet program to give patients admitted in the hospital and their families more access to their medical record.

In addition to spearheading a more ingrained innovative culture, Bates will also serve as the executive sponsor of the Brigham Innovation Hub, the hospital’s main innovation pipeline until now.

The roles will add to Bates already extensive resume and busy schedule. Bates will continue to serve as the chief of the Division of General Medicine and Primary Care at the Brigham. Bates is also a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a professor of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard School of Public Health, where he co-directs the program in clinical effectiveness.
