Food is a class issue and only the rich can eat well, Our Food Future study reveals

  • Poorer homes buy more processed food because they believe it is cheaper

  • Families think there is a ‘social divide’ and there is a ‘two-tier food society’

  • Fast-paced modern lifestyles mean some individuals are too busy to cook

  • Modern food habits mean people are eating more calories than they need

Families fear food is becoming a class issue – with only the rich being able to eat well, a survey found.

They think healthy eating costs more and even worry that Britain is a ‘two-tier food society’, it revealed.

Poorer households bought more processed junk food because it was cheaper, the survey’s participants believed.

The Our Food Future study by the Government’s Food Standards Agency questioned 1,383 Britons.

On food being a class issue, the FSA said: ‘Participants raised concerns that we are increasingly seeing a social divide in relation to food. These concerns were also compounded by a perception that fast-paced modern lifestyles meant that some individuals were too busy to cook and eat healthier, less processed foods.

Historically, the British diet for all involved a relatively healthy mix of meat and two veg. But today’s culture of ready meals, pizzas and eating on the go means adults and children are consuming many more calories

Those polled assumed poorer households were more likely to buy convenience, processed food laced with fat, sugar, salt and calories because it was cheaper

‘For example, some people felt that organic produce which was exempted from some of this modern processing was healthier and tastier, but that you paid for the privilege.’

It added: ‘Participants expressed anxiety that food is becoming a “class issue” – increasingly perceiving a divide between the haves and have-nots in terms of the kind of food they eat. Participants expected that this trend would continue in the future, and even worried about a two-tier food society.’

Other factors such as the rise of working mothers mean cooking from scratch with healthy raw ingredients is also rarer.

One participant said eating cakes and biscuits was an occasional treat when she was young, but they were now eaten regularly and portions were bigger.

The FSA said its public workshops questioned whether the food that we eat now is as healthy and as high quality as it was.

Even healthy ‘whole’ foods were perceived as less tasty than they used to be, with processing methods blamed. A woman from Cardiff said she had given up fruit as it was ‘tasteless’, while a Londoner said time pressures led to ‘silly choices’ in supermarkets.

WHY GREEN VEGETABLES ARE EXTRA GOOD FOR US

Eat your greens and you will grow up big and strong, parents tell their children. Now scientists have found that vegetables are good for our stomachs too.

They found a sugar molecule in cabbage, spinach and other leafy greens which boosts good stomach bacteria.

That leaves little room for ‘bad’ bugs responsible for tummy upsets.

Dr Ethan Goddard-Borger, of Australia’s Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, said the SQ molecule was an important factor in ‘improving good digestive health’ and could aid the cultivation of ‘good’ gut bacteria, including beneficial forms of E. coli.

The discovery may also help lead to a ‘desperately-needed’ new class of drugs to combat bugs resistant to current antibiotics, he added.

The FSA survey also prompted debate over whether budgets dictated food shopping decisions. It reported ‘concern about the long-term health consequences of consumption of more processed foods, which were perceived to be sold at cheaper price points and thus readily available to consumers on a budget’.

Those polled ‘wondered if rising levels of obesity were in part driven by increased consumption of processed foods’. Subjects were questioned on the idea that eating healthily had to be pricier. The sparse diet of wartime Britain was healthier than that eaten by many people today.

The FSA added: ‘Participants acquiesced that eating healthily on a budget was not impossible, but challenging. To orient your food spend in this way required conscious deliberation and more time in terms of planning.’

A woman quizzed in central London said: ‘People feel pressured and overwhelmed, which leads to silly choices around food and in supermarkets.

‘The people who eat convenience foods are under more financial and time pressure.’

“I don’t deny myself bread. I have bread every single day,” Winfrey said.

Nutritionist Maya Feller also said that it was possible for other people to have a weight loss like Oprah Winfrey’s, but also warns about not getting “too carried away.”

“Don’t be afraid of carbs — but know what you’re eating,” said Feller. “If you pay attention to portion, you can lose weight.”

She added that people who want to concentrate on weight loss could very well benefit from reading the packaging label on the items they purchase. For instance, she said that bread with “whole grain” or “whole wheat” are most ideal.

Oprah Winfrey’s weight loss has been a topic for gossip over the years as the media mogul would often find herself struggling with her weight and finding a fitness regimen that would work for her.

In a report with The Guardian, Oprah Winfrey has a deal with the company that includes her making personal endorsements. She was responsible for adding nearly $150M to Weight Watchers’ market shares, with her own stake gaining about $12.5M in value.

According to the report, Oprah paid $43M for her 10 percent share in the company late last year. Because of that, the weight loss company’s stock value rose from $6.79 to $15.

Oprah Winfrey owns about 15 percent of Weight Watchers and 3.5 million of stock options are included.

Lea Michelle fronted the latest issue of Women’s Health, where she flaunted her impressive physique in a bikini top and low-riding sweatpants.

Too Fab reported that the “Glee” star put a few of her popular tattoos on display in the snapshots with her bird hip ink and the words “If you say so” on her ribcage clearly visible. The phrase is a tribute to her late boyfriend Cory Monteith, the words being the last he said to her before his tragic death, Us Weekly shared.

The 29-year-old actress opened up about her fitness routine and shared some intel from the set of her new show “Scream Queen.” “I’m really close with Becca [Tobin], who was on ‘Glee’ with me, and we go hiking all the time,” the star said of her workouts. “I hike on trails about four times a week; I love being outside.”

“[Becca and I] also do hot yoga; I like exercises that have a little spirituality to them,” she continued. “It’s the greatest combination of meditation, detox, and a fantastic workout. Emma Roberts introduced me to Pilates in New Orleans.”

However, Lea revealed that it is not just her body she’s trying to maintain on set of the Fox horror comedy series. “I refuse to scream on the show. Ryan [Murphy] got me in a booth one day and I told him ‘I’m screaming like twice and then you’re going to have to use it the whole season’ because I’m a singer and I was there with Ariana Grande and we were like ‘We can’t scream, this is our gift,"” she divulged.

“So I don’t scream, they just dub it in,” she added. “But they say I do a really good scream face without having to scream.”

“The cast is incredible, the scripts are so funny, they’re also really scary,” Lea explained. “I couldn’t be happier right now. It’s really such an amazing blessing.”

The 6’2 actor has openly talked about struggles with his weight.

In 2010, Goodman lost 100 pounds, which he credited to cutting sugar and alcohol from his diet and to working out six days a week. “It takes a lot of creative energy to sit and figure out what you’re going to eat next,” he told People.

That same year, Goodman told David Letterman that his weight has flucuated severely, even reaching nearly 400 pounds at one point.

“I’d get off of ‘Roseanne every spring. I’d lose 60 pounds every spring,” he said at the time. “Then I got too fond of the barleycorn. I’d gain it back and then some, every year. It’s going to be an ongoing process for the rest of my life,” he said.

“Trumbo” focuses on the story of Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, who was blacklisted for being a Communist in the 1940s. The film hits theaters Nov. 6.
