How safe is Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian’s weight-loss strategy? The stars continue to drop the pounds through waist training. And their latest Instagram photos do show that they have slimmed down. But doctors think this corset-wearing strategy is risky.
Kourtney showed off her latest waist cincher with an Instagram photo on Saturday. She captioned the photo above, “I am pretty much the queen of multitasking. Obsessed with anything where I am doing more than one thing at a time, especially since I skipped the gym today. A little Saturday morning waist cinching and working on my posture while cleaning out my closet.”
This is not the first time Kourtney Kardashian has praised waist training. Back in February, she credited the Waist Gang Society brand with helping her lose weight after giving birth to baby Reign.

And Kourtney is not the only member of her family to use waist training. Kim Kardashian first touted this weight-loss strategy last summer. And earlier this week, Khloe posted her own corset Instagram photo and urged her followers to check out Waist Gang Society’s website.
“Im obsessed with the gym but a little extra help never hurt nobody,” Khloe captioned the photo below. “@waistgangsociety and@premadonna87 keep my waist snatched and posture perfect. Once you try it, you will become obsessed!!! Head over to whatsawaist.com the ONLY place to get your waist trainer.”

So what is waist training? This new weight-loss method, which is also endorsed by celebrities like Kim Zolciak-Biermann, involves wearing tight corsets to help slim down. Waist Gang Society, in particular, claims that wearing the corset for four hours a day while maintaining a healthy diet and exercise will give you, “a beautiful sexy silhouette while permanently getting rid of unwanted inches around your waist.”

But the concept is quite controversial. Several doctors have warned that waist training is at best useless and at worst dangerous.
“It’s not real,” Dr. Sajani Shah of Tufts Medical Center told Boston Globe. “If there’s any reduction in inches in the waist, it’s probably temporary. … It compresses the stomach, the spleen, the heart. It impacts how well the lungs can inflate.”
Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Nassif agreed. He told E! News, “I’m worried about what effect it has on the lower intestines with pushing the contents into the pelvic region. That is a [concern], in addition to compressing the diaphragm, which causes pulmonary problems. Basically, there is potential for internal organ compression causing kidney, gastrointestinal and lung issues.”
Other doctors say the impact of waist training is more psychological than physical. But this weight-loss method does seem to work best on women like Kourtney Kardashian who have recently given birth.
“[Waist training] is not so much about medical results,” said Dr. Pouya Shafipour of Wellesley Medical in Los Angeles. “It makes you feel more confident. It makes you want to exercise more. For people that are heavier, these physically give them a lot more mobility. And psychologically it provides a feel-good effect, makes them stand straight. A lot of the benefits involve just feeling better, feeling slimmer and feeling taller. It gives them a lot of confidence to do things that they probably normally wouldn’t.”
