WHEN trying to lose weight, exercising alone is not sufficient.


To gain good results, a good workout and proper dieting is required. But when trying to stick to a diet in order to lose weight, there are certain foods you should never consume.


These include:


1. Sodas


According to nutritionist Donovan Grant, these are high in calories and are only stored as fat. “Because of the high sugar content, it increases your blood sugar levels, which releases insulin and stores the excess sugar as fat,” he said.


2. White rice/bread/flour


These are other high-calorie chart toppers which, according to Grant, will only deplete the efforts of any exercise.


3. Mac and cheese


This is basically pasta made with cheese, milk and salt, and is packed with calories and sodium. “Foods high in salt increase your water weight which will show up on the scale,” Grant said.


4. Patties


According to Dr Alfred Dawes, general, laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon, the ‘real’ national dish of Jamaica does more harm than good, though it tastes great.


“Patties, as they are made now, are filled with fillers and less meat. The fat in the filler and crust give patties a whopping 350 to 400 calories. Eat two and wash them down with a soda, and you have set yourself the goal of running about eight miles to burn it off,” Dr Dawes explained.


5. Pastries


Pies, donuts and muffins may taste great and are hard to resist, but eating these will be futile to your weight loss efforts.


“Again, these have calories and add loads of sugar to your diet, plus they aren’t easy to digest,” Dr Dawes said


6. Cream soups


Eating the right types of soups can be beneficial to weight loss, but soups will not help you lose weight if they are high in calories. The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that you avoid soups with cheese, such as cheddar cheese or broccoli and cheese soup, as well as cream-based soups, such as cream of mushroom, cream of tomato or clam chowder.
