Video: Brave Tipperary hurler Noel McGrath opens up about testicular cancer battle

Cancer battler and Tipp hurler Noel McGrath has become an ambassador for Movember.

The 24-year-old former All-Star recorded a video for the cancer awareness fundraising campaign.

The hurler needed surgery and had to undergo chemotherapy but battled back to make an emotional return for Tipperary in the All-Ireland semi-final four months later.

In the film, McGrath admits he did nothing for three weeks after developing a lump on his testicle.

The 24-year-old needed surgery and a bout of chemotherapy, but battled back to make an emotional return for Tipperary in the All-Ireland semi-final with Galway, just four months later.

McGrath was given a standing ovation when he appeared as a second-half substitute.

After overcoming Testicular cancer, McGrath has become an Ambassador for the Movember foundation, which encourages men to be more open about Men’s Health issues, and fundraisers for research.

In a video addressing young men about the issue, McGrath admits he did nothing for two or three weeks after developing a lump on his testicle. But once he went to his doctor he got tremendous support, and he stresses the importance of early detection and treatment.

After Tipperary were beaten by Galway, tribemen’s boss Anthony Cunningham spoke to Noel.

Noel added: “In fairness to Anthony, he came and he shook my hand.

“He just wished me well and said it was great to see me back.

“He didn’t need to do what he did, but he did.

“It just goes to show the spirit that’s in the GAA.

“We’re lucky to have a sport that’s so community based.”
