Jeb’s Statement that Planned Parenthood doesn’t address Women’s Health Issues is a Bald-Faced Lie

Jeb Bush has argued that Planned Parenthood doesn’t take care of women’s health issues. Politifact has evaluated his statement and determined that it’s a bald-faced lie.

Bush made the statement on August 25 during a town hall meeting in Englewood, Colorado, after he was asked about his record on women’s health, and what he would do as president.

“When I was governor, we expanded those programs through community-based organizations, and that’s something I think the federal government needs to do,” said Bush. “I, for one, don’t think Planned Parenthood ought to get a penny, though. And that’s the difference because they’re not actually doing women’s health issues. They’re involved in something way different than that.”

Even setting aside the performance of abortions, Planned Parenthood offers a wide range of services to women, as Politifact points out:

The organization offers contraception, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, pregnancy testing, prenatal services and cancer screenings, including breast exams.

Jeb Bush is acting like all the other GOP candidates. He is stating solely what he believes his base wants to hear, rather than seriously talking about the issues and how to improve American lives.

Women More Flexible In Their Sexual Identities - Clapway

A study revealed that unlike men, women are more flexible about their sexual identities. Romantic opportunities seem to sway the sexual identities of women and not for men.

Women are three times more likely to change their sexual identities when they move into young adulthood

Dr. Elizabeth Aura McClintock, a professor of sociology in the University of Notre Dame conducted this study by looking at data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health). She tracked 5018 women and 4191 men throughout their adolescent-to-adulthood phase. This traced a time period from 1994-1995 to 2007-2008, with their average ages being 16 and 28 at the start and end of the survey. Confirming a well-known finding, the survey revealed that women are more likely than men to report bisexuality; they are also more likely to change their sexual identities in adulthood. The widely popular male eroticization of same-sex attraction between females could have contributed to the flexibility in female sexual identity. On the other hand, men are more likely to report that they’re either 100% heterosexual or 100% homosexual.

Women More Flexible In Their Sexual Identities - Clapway

Physically attractive women are more likely to call themselves “100% heterosexual”

Women with higher education and perceived to be attractive (according to the Add Health ratings) are more likely to stick to the hetero-conformist behavior because they have favorable options in the heterosexual partner market. On the other hand, women with same proclivities towards men and women, but faced with fewer favorable heterosexual partners may steer towards homosexuality more. This romantic opportunity-based labeling of sexual identity is found more in women. Men with higher education are surprisingly less likely to call themselves “100% heterosexual”. Physical attractiveness does not have any association with male sexual identity and romantic opportunity has no influence on it.

Sexual identity is a lot more complex than we think

Often social dictates control what we “call” ourselves in the society. This study was meant to tease out self-reported sexual identities of women and men from adolescence to adulthood. The study does not purport that sexual identities can be chosen at will, but merely that social ethos may influence how people perceive their own sexuality.

Did you know sex can also affect friendships?

Social psychologist Anderson Langdon said there were no hard and fast solutions but it was up to male leaders to stand up and lead by example.

“Leaders are made, whether by self or circumstance and these leaders realise the most important tools are the mind, body and soul so therefore what is clear is that these leaders take care of their health,” he said.

Langdon, a research officer with the Barbados Family Planning Association, said non-communicable diseases remained the top causes of death among men. He was speaking today at a two day men’s health workshop at the Dayrells Road, St Michael offices of the Pan American Health Organisation and World Health Organisation.

The workshop was entitled Building Men for Successful Leadership Roles in Barbados and Langdon said it was timely in light of the need of targeted programmes.

PAHO/WHO representative Dr Godfrey Xuereb also called for older men to set an example.

“We have to try and be promoters of physical activity and set examples for our male children because we see boys as being active up to age six then as soon as they get to the eleven plus it drops to nothing as we parents push them into academics,” he said. (CA)

Combat Roles Hazardous to Women's Health

Last week, 1st Lt. Shaye Haver, 25, and Capt. Kristen Griest, 26, became the first women to earn their Ranger Tabs, graduating from the U.S. Army’s Ranger School at Fort Benning, GA. Maj. Gen. Scott Miller, the guest speaker at the graduation ceremony, emphasized that both women were held to the same standards as their male counterparts, insisting “a 5-mile run is still a 5-mile run. Standards do not change. A 12-mile march is still a 12-mile march.” True enough. But as Center for Military Readiness (CMR) president Elaine Donnelly reveals, there is a jarring flaw in the military’s headlong rush to make men and women interchangeable cogs in combat arms units: previously-undisclosed military combat experiments demonstrate that women sustain injury rates at double the rate of men.

The grueling Ranger course, emphasizing physical strength and endurance, was launched on a one-time basis as part of the Army’s effort to determine which combat jobs can eventually be opened up to women. Women were part of the training at Fort Benning due to a January 2013 directive by senior Pentagon leaders to integrate women into front-line combat units, including the Army Rangers and Navy SEALs, by 2016.

Haver and Griest were two of 96 soldiers who ultimately passed the course, with 40 of the 364 soldiers who began the training going straight through the course in 62 days. The rest of the graduates were soldiers who repeated parts of the course from earlier cycles. Nineteen women were part of the equation, and although Haver and Greist are the only two graduates so far, another woman is repeating an earlier phase of the training in hope of joining them. Regardless of their success, none of the women will be allowed to join the elite 75th Ranger Regiment, which conducts raids and other Special Ops missions.

All three women had failed the first phase of training two previous times, but were given a third chance as “Day 1 recycles,” a status given to Ranger candidates who excel in some area of Ranger School while struggling to pass a key component. The component they had trouble with is known as the Crawl or Darby Phase, a 20-day course designed to assess and develop both the physical and mental skill required to complete combat missions.

The three women were part of a group of eight who made it through the initial Ranger Assessment Phase, commonly known as “RAP Week.” During the training candidates are graded by both their peers and Ranger instructors (RIs). Some of the women who failed the Darby Phase were disappointed, and anonymous sources told the Washington Post there’s the sense “that no RI really wants to be the first one to pass a woman.” Brig. Gen. James E. Rainey, the commandant of the U.S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, took umbrage with that claim. “The women did worse than men at patrolling,” he declared. “That’s a fact.”

What’s also a fact is an unmistakable odor of political pressure. Despite the reality this course was launched on a one-time basis, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno insisted the Army will “probably run a couple more pilots,” he told reporters last May. “It’s been a real success for us, and we’ll see how it goes from there.”

Odierno’s statement resonated with reserve Army colonel Ellen Haring, a fellow at Women in International Security, an organization that deals with the integration of women in the military. In June she expressed disbelief that none of the 19 women who initially qualified for Ranger School passed the course, questioning how men with no combat arms background could pass Ranger School but no women had. “They just have to keep the course open, because this will normalize over time,” Haring said.

Donnelly disagreed, saying if the Army called the course a one-time event, it should remain that way. “Where do we get to the point where we say ‘Maybe this really isn’t a good idea after all?’” she said. “When they start making accommodations like that when you said that there wouldn’t be, you start to question the whole process.”

The process should be questioned, and nothing makes that clearer than the Army’s combat research on “Exception to Policy” (ETP) experiments, revealing the aforementioned injury rates. CMR explains the findings demonstrate disparate rates of injury in Military Occupational Specialties (MOS), such as field and air defense artillery where women were injured at double the rate of their male counterparts. “In the Field Artillery Surveyor Meteorological Crewmember MOS, for example, injuries for women were approximately 112% higher than men’s. In the Bradley fighting vehicle system maintainer MOS, the rate was 133% higher,” a CMR report reveals.

The U.S. Army Institute of Public Health provided CMR with another document revealing that even in basic combat training, the approximate average injury rates for women were 114 percent higher than for men, and in training for military police and engineers they were 108 percent higher. Moreover, while such training requires informed consent, CMR explains a sample consent form provided to them shows that injury rates were not included on it.

There are cost factors as well. Retraining women reassigned from positions beyond their physical strength would cost the Army $30,697 per soldier. An additional $17,606 in basic training costs, not counting individual recruitment expenditures that are higher for women, would be necessitated following decisions to drop out of courses. CMR wonders how the Army reconciles such “avoidable costs” with the reality that the Obama administration is determined to reduce America’s military to pre-WWII levels.

The British Ministry of Defence conducted a similar study, and the report it issued confirms many of Donnelly’s fears. While conceding that there will be elite women capable of passing entry tests for Ground Close Combat (GCC) units, “these women will be more susceptible to acute short term injury than men” and the roles requiring women to carry weight for prolonged periods of time “will be the most damaging.” Furthermore and far more important, the report reveals that “combat marksmanship degrades as a result of fatigue when the combat load increases in proportion to body weight and strength.”

Nonetheless, CMR notes the British report is laced with suggestions regarding how to “mitigate” such injuries, relying on social theories and unrealistic expectations completely undermined by the hard data contained in the same report. CMR insists those efforts are “not credible,” and that the burden to prove otherwise rests on “advocates of unprecedented changes affecting military effectiveness.”

CMR also received documents indicating the Army has prepared a Doctrine, Organization, Training, Materiel, Leadership and Education, Personnel, Facilities, and Policy (DOTMLPF-P) analysis. The topics on the analysis, which were almost completely redacted, only address some of the major sticking points.

CMR insists a more comprehensive list would include higher costs associated with recruiting and training, new separate-gender facilities, the remedial training necessary to eliminate attitudinal barriers, and the extra personnel necessitated by pregnancy and other extended leaves. The analysis should also include what social service/legal specialists will be required to deal with sexual misconduct issues in the combat arms arena and the expanded medical needs associated with higher rates of female injuries and disability.

“By any measure, this is an expensive, unnecessary social experiment,” CMR concludes. “Non-disclosure of the full consequences and costs prevents Congress, the media, and the general public from evaluating and criticizing policy changes that will affect every man and woman in the military.” Those changes include the daunting reality that “sequestration budget cuts are taking essential resources away, while heavy burdens of social experimentation are being loaded on.”

Those burdens may be acceptable to those who view the military as the last bastion of resistance to the social engineering schemes they wish to impose on virtually every aspect of American society. But it is a fool’s errand in the military arena, especially during a period of global unrest that has reached ominous proportions. Inclusion is not, nor will it ever be, the ultimate barometer by which national security will be measured.

6 Weight-Loss Tips That NEVER Work

If you look for weight-loss tips online, Google will throw you a million results. You ask a friend or two about it and they will list at least a dozen, in one breath. And yet, even after following them, you fail to lose weight. So the question is which of these tips really work and which don’t? To help you decide better, we spoke to Indrayani Pawar, Team Leader, Dietician at Hinduja Healthcare Surgical, Mumbai. She tells us the truth behind some of these common weight-loss tips, so that you can go ahead and ditch them for good.

Claim: Carbs are bad. Eliminate carbs from your diet to lose weight
Truth: These days many people are advocating for a low-carb or a no-carb diet. Ideally a balanced diet, which is adequate in complex carbohydrates, first-class proteins and essential fatty acids will help in weight loss and maintenance for long term. One should be definitely avoiding simple carbohydrates like refined flours, sugar, corn syrup, fruit juices etc, but can include complex carbohydrates like whole grains and cereals, whole fruits and vegetables. These are vital for your overall health.

Claim: As long as you exercise, it’s okay to eat as much as you want
    Truth:
Calorie intake and output should go hand in hand. When calorie intake (eating) is much higher than the output (exercise), weight loss can be affected. That means there won’t be much of fat loss. Hence, in order to lose weight (fat mass and not muscle mass), one has to follow a calorie-restricted diet.

    weight loss

Claim: Drink a lot of water and you’ll lose weight too

Truth: Water is an essential part of any healthy diet as it helps to keep one hydrated and also helps flush the build-up of toxins from the body. A healthy individual with adequate physical activity needs to include at least two litres of water every day. The need may differ as per the exercise levels one follows. However, drinking water does not help in losing weight directly, it helps to eliminate toxins and hence fasten the process of weight loss. So don’t go around guzzling water forcibly in the name of weight loss.

Claim: Slimming pills are great for weight loss

Truth: Many slimming pills are said to have several side effects. You may lose weight, but are you really willing to risk your health? The best way to lose weight is to have a calorie-restricted balanced diet with a good exercise regimen.

    slimming pills

Claim: Eating only low fat foods is the best way to lose weight
    Truth:
On the contrary, fats in moderation are essential in weight loss. It’s always advisable to include essential fatty acids like PUFA (omega 3 and 6 fatty acids), MUFA and decrease the intake of saturated and trans-fats in one’s diet. It will really make the difference.

Claim: Juice cleanses are great for weight loss
    Truth:
Fresh fruit and vegetable juices are rich in antioxidants, vitamins minerals and phytonutrients. They help cleanse the liver and increase basal metabolic rate. Though they help aid in weight loss, one cannot rely totally on a juice cleanse diet to lose weight, as it does lack proteins and essential fatty acids. Hence, though they help you lose weight easily, they are not good for long-term weight loss and maintenance. Plus relying on juices to sustain you all day, may not be the best idea and could leave you unenergetic and dull.

A new study conducted by researchers of the Center for Integrative Clinical and Molecular Medicine in Brisbane showed that Fenugreek seeds, or methi seeds, abundantly found in several states in India, can boost a healthy sex life in men.

    Like Us on Facebook

Furthermore, several components of the seeds also contain several health benefits such as protection from high cholesterol counts in the body, reduce the possibility of getting cardiovascular diseases, skin diseases and even improve hair loss.

Many couples who are married find it difficult to revive their sexual urges, especially when most of them are always occupied with busy work schedules and other responsibilities in the household. As a result, some of them acquire several sexual drive boosters overseas commonly available in the United States.

As The Bahamas Weekly reported, physical activity is one of the boosters of sexual health. Therefore, when one is active in aerobic exercises, he will gain good blood flow that can boost his healthy sex life.

However, researchers found a simple Indian food ingredient that could give men a healthier sex life, reported Zee News India.

A study was conducted by these researchers from the Center for Integrative Clinical and Molecular Medicine in Brisbane focused on determining the health benefits of Fenugreek seeds, such spices most commonly found in Indian states such as Rajasthan, Guajarat, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Haryana, and Punjab.

The research showed that the seeds’ components such as saponins could stimulate the male sex hormone testosterone that promotes a healthy sex life for men.

Additionally, other components of Fenugreek seeds also provide for improved health conditions other than sexual activity. For example, a compound named galactomannan could defer cardiovascular diseases when consumed regularly. Also, its paste was also founded to reduce the risks of consumers getting skin problems and reduce the risks of hair loss.

Therefore, apart from physical activity, men can garner a healthy sex life when they consume Fenugreek seeds, a common ingredient used in Indian cuisines and abundantly found in the said country.

Meet The Men And Women Protesting Planned Parenthood

People participate in a rally at Utah Capitol Rotunda, in Salt Lake City, organized in support of Gov. Gary Herbert’s recent decision to remove the state from federal funding of Planned Parenthood.

On Saturday, thousands of anti-abortion protestors demonstrated in front of Planned Parenthood clinics throughout the nation, calling for the defunding of one of the country’s largest health providers.

The “National Day of Protest,” planned by a coalition of anti-abortion groups at 300 locations nationwide, came a day after the Center for Medical Progress, a right-wing anti-abortion group that has employed a long-term strategy intended to discredit the health organization, released its newest video on Friday.

The group has released of number of generated outrage among conservative politicians — Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) pledged to “do whatever I can to stop them and will introduce an amendment to pending Senate legislation to immediately strip every dollar of Planned Parenthood funding” — and prompted a number of states to launch investigations into the women’s health organization. State officials in Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, and South Dakota have thus far been unable to prove evidence of wrongdoing: In a statement, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey said she that she found “no evidence that PPLM is involved in any way in the buying or selling of tissue,” and vowed to “fight to support Planned Parenthood and preserve the essential health services that they provide to so many women.”

Still, states are moving quickly to signs reading “the Holocaust of our day,” “abortion is murder,” and “a person’s a person no matter how small.” The hashtags ##PPSellsBabyParts, #ProtestPP, and #DefundPP trended on Twitter.

Here are some of the men and women protesting the organization that provides health services to millions of women at centers nationwide.

    What are the adrenal glands?

Sitting atop the kidneys are the adrenals, two-triangle shaped glands whose main job is to produce hormones that are essential for living. Each adrenal gland is composed of two structures: the outer part is called the adrenal cortex, while the inner part is called the medulla. Both structures produce various hormones and neurotransmitters.

    Stress and the adrenal glands

Stress hormones are released as part of the body’s fight or flight response. They cause physiological changes, such as an increase in heart rate, a release of glucose for quick energy, a boost in mental focus and immune response, and a shutting down of digestive and reproductive functions.

    The consequences of chronic stress

Unfortunately, stress can be constant, and the adrenal glands may be continually called upon to secrete stress hormones. Many people experience adrenal fatigue which is characterized by feelings of fatigue, difficulty concentrating, occasional indigestion, weight gain, compromised sleep, and lowered resistance.

    Discover Adrenal Health

Because the adrenal glands play such a huge role in our feelings of vitality and well-being, it is important to maintain their overall health. Adrenal Health Liquid Phyto-Caps is designed to help maintain a healthy response to stress by supporting the adrenal glands and nourishing the nervous system, while maintaining healthy levels of stress hormones. *

The CEO behind the first drug to boost women's sex drive has been working toward this her whole ...

    Sprout 4

    Sprout

Sprout CEO Cindy Whitehead, at center, won approval for her drug flibaserin this week.

This week’s biggest news in health has been over a controversial little pink pill designed to increase the libidos of women who struggle with chronically low sex drives.

The pill, called Addyi, is for women with chronically low sex drives. It sends chemicals to the brain to stimulate sexual desire and is taken daily, and it has some pretty serious side effects when it interacts with alcohol.

Sprout Pharmaceuticals – the company behind the pill since 2011 and got it FDA approved last week – was acquired by the drug company Valeant Pharmaceuticals on Thursday for $1 billion.

Business Insider spoke with Sprout’s CEO Cindy Whitehead over the phone about the big news, and what she thinks of the first drug approved for women’s sexual health.

Business Insider: Was the Valeant deal something you guys had hoped for in the long run for Sprout?

CW: I think we were so mission-driven just to get to finish line of completing all the science and getting to an approval of a drug. I think what this affords us is to do that in a way that we as a 34-person company wouldn’t have otherwise been able to, and I think that means … affordable access for more women.Things like copay assistance programs and those that we’ll be able to be more generous with than we would have been able to be at Sprout alone.

And ultimately having now opened this door for women in the United States, we can go into other markets in which women also don’t have a medical treatment for this condition, even if the prevalence data looks exactly the same.

[Acquisition talk] has been very recent, I think. After the [FDA] advisory committee meeting, companies saw the possibility that we were going to get to this first for women. They were interested, and that’s really when discussions started happening.

But it became clear for us I think very quickly that Valeant was the right partner because our entire team stays, and we will run this, and we will continue to do this in a way that we see is right for women.

BI: Will the acquisition effect the October 17 entry date to market or the target price range of about 400 per month?

CW: No, everything will stay on tap as we have been planning it for Sprout.

BI: Why did Sprout push so hard for this drug and what’s the significance to you?

CW: For the women. I’ve actually been in the field of sexual medicine for some time. I saw this spectacular science that was going to be abandoned, and I thought it was going to be abandoned frankly because of a society unwilling to have a frank discussion about the biology of sex for women. And the need was just too great.

I understood not only from the clinicians who see these patients every day in their office, what an important need this was but really from just women themselves, I think my greatest privilege in all of this is how many women have shared their very personal stories with me and the pain I think they have dealt with this condition.

The hallmark characteristic, the only reason you’d be considered to be treated for this is if it is causing you distress. And for many of these women it’s profound distress. It’s breaking up their marriages, it’s really having them feel lesser, and so I think the possibility of providing women access to a treatment really meant a lot to me.

BI: Most of your pipeline relies on Addyi. Are there any other drugs now that this has been approved? What’s next?

CW: First things first, we’re just going to launch this the right way. I think we’re going to get out there, we’re going to educate prescribers and pharmacies through a certification program.

We’ll stay singular in our focus for the near term, but ultimately who knows what the possibility would be? I’m deeply passionate about women’s health, and a segment that I think has been stagnant for too long.

I’d love to see this usher in a new era of interest in terms of investment and research for conditions like HSDD that uniquely impact women.

An Overview of Balding Guys"s Hairstyles

It’s unbelievable how difficult it is to find any kind of respectable information on the net about baldness guys’s hairdos.

You’ll know this on your own if you have actually ever before tried to do a search on Google for ‘hair loss males’s hairstyles’, ‘hairdos for balding men’, ‘hair loss hairstyles’ or other quantity of variations on the style.

This is shocking taking into consideration the amount of baldness males there are which should have a suitable hairdo as high as any type of one else …

So … confronted with this injustice I have actually come up with my own overview of hair loss guys’s hairdos …

It’s a truth that 95 % of all balding or bald men suffer from male pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness normally starts with a declining hairline at the front and also is regularly accompanied with thinning on top.

Gradually, this thinning becomes a full fledged bald area, and also the hairless area expands to cover the head, aside from the sides as well as around the back.

No matter this, as long as there is a single hair left on my head I’ll still require a trendy hairdo. So, what balding hairstyle alternatives are readily available?

The most awful balding males’s hairstyle is the comb over. This is the traditional appearance precious of guys of a particular age whereby the hair is grown longer on one side of the head and also ‘brushed over’ the bald area to the other side.

This method only spells disaster even in the tiniest of breezes as well as is to be prevented in any way prices.

Yet thinking you already recognize this, exactly what are the other do’s and also do n’ts to balding men’s hairstyles?

The first typical blunder is combing the hair directly back. This may cover bald places, but it only exposes the temple as well as draws attention to the receding hairline.

The second is expanding your hair much longer at the back making up for exactly what’s doing not have on top. This unbalances the head and also attracts much more focus to the scalp as well as the baldness.

Younger guys with thinning hair could be attracted to make use of gel … however this isn’t really recommended. Gel globs your hair with each other and exposes the scalp.

Also, growing your hair long in an effort to cover up in fact triggers hair to separate and also show more scalp.

So, exactly what are the do’s?

Obtain much more all-natural looking fluff to your hair by utilizing mousses as well as conditioners.

Expand your continuing to be hair by a few inches, get it layered as well as brush it ahead to separate the receding hairline.

If your hairline isn’t declining as well severely, however the top of your head is thinning, you can get away with maintaining the front lengthy and also brushing your hair directly back to cover the bald spot.

Ultimately nonetheless, your bald spot will increase.

The utmost hair loss guys’s hairstyle when confronted with a glossy hairless dome, is to go the whole hog as well as cut it off or a minimum of an extremely close trim.

You’ll probably be astonished at people’s responses as well as the praises you’ll get– the shaved look is a totally acceptable hair loss hairstyle nowadays.

Beginning with electrical clippers like you locate in the barbers. After you have actually clipped the heavy stuff, soap up with cutting gel. This provides you a closer, smoother cut than cutting lotion.

Then using a razor, begin on top as well as cut down with the grain making sure at the back – it’s recommended to view exactly what you’re doing with a tiny mirror.

Cutting your head just takes a couple of mins and you do not need to do it everyday (2 to 3 times a week is great).

Looking after your brand-new shaved head is much like dealing with your face. Wash routinely with moisturizing soap, instead of an extreme antiperspirant soap that could dry the skin on your head.

Also utilize a high quality moisturizer after every wash– cheaper creams will certainly merely congest your pores.

For the summertime, locate a moisturizer with a sun protection factor of at least 15 to prevent sunburn on your head. And also you’ll need a cozy hat in winter to keep your temperature.

If shaving does not tickle your fancy then you can consistently go with a wig as a last option – though I wouldn’t recommend it

Weight loss tips & tricks: hot chili pepper prevents obesity

    Aug 21, 2015 07:11 AM EDT

LONDON, ENGLAND – OCTOBER 09: Hot Cayenne chili peppers are displayed at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Harvest Festival Show on October 9, 2013 in London, England. A UK research has revealed that hot chili peppers could help with weight loss as consuming it could help stimulate the stomach’s receptors to signal the feeling of fullness.

Researchers from the University of Adelaide’s Center for Nutrition and Gastrointestinal Diseases have found that chili pepper can be a potential treatment for obesity as it can stimulate the stomach receptors into telling the brain that the body is full. Their findings are published in the journal PLOS ONE.

According to Associate Professor Amanda Page, senior research fellow in the University of Adelaide’s School of Medicine and lead author of the study, they have discovered that the capsaicin in chili can be used to activate the TRPV1 receptors in the stomach.

“The stomach stretches when it is full, which activates nerves in the stomach to tell the body that it has had enough food. We found that this activation is regulated through hot chili pepper or TRPV1 receptors,” Page said in a news release published in the university’s website.

She added that the signal of TRPV1 receptors can be diminished through too much fat, similar to the high fat diet consumed by obese patients.

According to Dr. Stephen Kentish, coauthor of the research, the results of their studies will help in the research and development of new treatment methods.

“It’s exciting that we now know more about the TRPV1 receptor pathway and that the consumption of capsaicin may be able to prevent overeating through an action on nerves in the stomach,” Dr. Kentish said via Science Daily.

He added that further research will look into the reason why TRPV1 receptors are “de-sensitized” by diets with high fat content and how to go about reversing the effects of it. In addition to obesity treatment, the study could also be used for weight gain prevention.

“The next stage of research will involve investigation of the mechanisms behind TRPV1 receptor activation with the aim of developing a more palatable therapy,” Dr. Kentish said in the report by Science Daily.

As for using the chili for weight loss treatments, ABC News reports that researchers will look into simulating the effect of the chili without the spice’s “hotness.”

“What we really want to do is we really want to be able to develop … potentially look at ways of exploiting this chemical without the hotness that’s perceived when you eat food laden with chilli, so it’s more just about making it more able to be consumed by a vast majority of people,” Kentish told the outlet.

How to improve your customers' gut instincts

Whole Foods Market fruit based smoothie for a healthy gut The produce industry also has plenty to offer the healthy drinks and juice trade

Stress, processed foods, and the increased use of medication are all playing havoc with our digestive systems. National Gut Week starts at the end of this month (August), and the good news for fresh produce players is that the message being put across by organisers is that a diet rich with vegetables and herbs can start the healing process

There’s a fair chance that, if they could talk, our digestive systems would very much agree with UK rock band Blur’s assertion that modern life is rubbish, because we appear to be introducing more and more junk food into our stomachs.

They might be right, but what can buyers do about this? Well, firstly, you need to be armed with the right information and understand which produce is most likely to have a positive effect.

Too many processed foods, refined sugars, alcohol, and caffeine are interfering with the gut microbiome, upsetting the natural balance and leading to an increase in digestive related disorders.

The campaign Love Your Gut, which brings together charity and medical organisations concerned with bowel and stomach diseases, claims that one in three of the UK population suffers from some form of digestive complaint.

For 16 years it has promoted Gut Week, this year taking place from August 31 to September 6, to raise awareness of how people can reclaim their digestive health through diet and lifestyle changes.

UK television presenter Gaby Roslin is this year’s ambassador, and during the week’s activity she will be promoting recipes devised by nutritionists, with an emphasis on vegetables and herbs – a message the produce industry could capitalise on.

“Gut health is an issue very close to my heart and something I have been campaigning to raise awareness of since my father was diagnosed with bowel cancer many years ago, which he thankfully survived,” explains Roslin.

“I’m particularly excited to be involved with the Gut Week Cookery School which will see myself and a nutritionist work up some of the delicious recipes that are designed to be gut-friendly.”

    Prune prominence

Of the foods known to be digestive friendly, prunes in particular are having a golden moment thanks in part to a campaign by the California Prune Board to have the fruit’s health benefits recognised by the European Food Safety Authority.

Dietician Jennette Higgs, who works with the California Prune Board, says the fruit can help people with the recommendations made in the recent report on carbohydrates by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition.

“[The] report has recommended we need to increase our fibre intakes to 30g per day, which is going to be difficult to achieve for many as on average the UK population was not achieving the previous lower recommendation (that equated to 23-24g per day),” Higgs says.

“Convenient sources of fibre, such as prunes, can be a useful addition to the diet to help contribute valuable fibre, as well as other nutrients. Dietary fibre is an essential component of a healthy balanced diet for proper functioning of the gut.

“It increases faecal mass and decreases intestinal transit times and insufficient fibre leads to constipation. A healthy gut flora (microbiota) will also be influenced by the fibre content of the diet, and recent research is pointing more and more to the importance of our gut bacteria as being crucial for good health.”

    Chewing overlooked

In terms of educating customers, telling them what they could eat is always high on the agenda, but how often do you delve into the realms of advising them how they should eat?

Naturopath Enid Taylor and co-founder of the Taymount Clinic, a practice of digestive health experts, says it is not just what we eat, but also how we eat that is the key to a better balance in the gut. She says that chewing is an often overlooked, but important aspect of processing food.

“Chew with your mouth closed, allowing lots of saliva to mix with the food,” she explains. “Ideally your food should be a liquid when it is swallowed. Some say at least 30 chews but at least this number and take smaller, and more polite, mouthfuls.

“It makes all the difference; what is not chewed cannot be digested fully – the enzymes only work on the surface and maybe 1mm down. If large particles exist, the enzymes cannot penetrate fully to digest them. What doesn’t digest will rot, and you make a simple choice between digestion or decomposition.

“This is why people have such bad smells coming from their digestive systems. Remember that stomachs do not have teeth; if you don’t chew it in your mouth; it stays in big lumps all the way down. [That represents] a waste of money on food you do not break down and absorb, as well as being a decomposition risk.”

Taylor says that people should also be wary of the claim by some bloggers and nutritionists not to eat raw foods later in the day, known as ‘No raw after 4’. “I have seen no scientific evidence that shows you should not eat raw food after 4pm,” she states.

“It is much harder for the body to digest any kind of food later in the evening when it is slowing down and preparing for sleep and rest. So do not eat anything after 7pm if you want to sleep well and especially no big meals after 8pm, it will all still be in your stomach the following morning.

“If you eat a high raw diet normally, you would of course want to eat raw foods after 4pm, so I don’t agree with that so-called ‘rule’ and I have seen no published papers which support it.

“Good digestive health is not a case of swallowing one single food that will guarantee your health. Sometimes things like fennel, peppermint, camomile and celery can be used as tea to help calm upset tummies but this is only a short-term solution for a temporally irritated stomach.

“Generally, the way to good digestive health is to avoid high gluten foods, eat lots of varieties of vegetables, go easy on sweet fruits, and absolutely leave out added sugar and sweet foods, Eat fresh foods whenever possible and completely pass up on processed, packaged and convenience foods.”

    Vegetables soothe

And of course, ways to achieve better digestive health can be more than just eating, this industry has plenty in the way of drinks to offer. Another high profile proponent for digestive health is Nick Ledger, director of UK Juicers. Ledger was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and claims that his symptoms were greatly reduced by a diet supplemented with vegetable juices.

“Personally I have found vegetable juices based on leafy greens to be very beneficial to the gut and have a soothing, tonic-like effect,” he says.

“A great combination that I drink regularly would be cucumber, celery, leafy greens (such as spinach or kale) and beetroot – although beetroot is quite potent so it needs to be used sparingly.

“I think it’s generally accepted that fruits are better eaten whole or in a smoothie. An apple can be a great thing to add to a green juice though to make it more palatable for some people.”

It’s not just the juicing industry that’s concerned with promoting good gut health, many health and grocery stores from independents to chains such as Whole Foods Market are dedicating entire sections of their stores to digestion-friendly vegetables and fruit-based foods, including fermented products.

With so much evidence pointing to the digestive system as the key to good health, isn’t it time that we as an industry begin to help the nation to hone their their gut instincts and stop treating their stomachs like a garbage bin?

How to improve your customers" gut instincts
