Orangeville man leads international Next Top...

Canadian champion jockey Tyler Pizarro, National Lacrosse League stars Josh Sanderson and Andrew Suitor, plus Ontario Hockey League (OHL) referee Scott Lawson have two things in common.

Each of them have resided in Orangeville, and local strength and conditioning coach Anthony Fenech has trained them all.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to train a lot of upper echelon elite athletes,” the 37-year-old owner of Titan Training said. “I don’t know planes, trains and automobiles. This is what I know.”

Fenech is currently leading the Men’s Health Magazine Next Top Trainer online contest by about 60 votes.

“I don’t know planes, trains and automobiles. This is what I know.”

He is competing against trainers from all across North America, including those based in much larger urban centres such as Las Vegas, Tucson and San Diego.

“I’m busting at the seams right now,” Fenech said. “I’m the only Canadian, so that is a huge advantage. If there is only one Canuck, how could you not take him right?”

The winner of the contest will gain a chance to be included in a Men’s Health fitness DVD and potentially be featured in the magazine.

When the voting period closes in early April, contest organizers will identify eight finalists to participate in the contest’s next phase.

Fenech said those finalists would then travel to the United States for an eight-day trial, putting their strength and conditioning knowledge to the test.

“Each day a guy gets voted off,” Fenech said. “They are ranked by celebrity trainers, much like Ink Master and Masterchef.”

If given the opportunity, Fenech likes his chances since he is certified in several athletic disciplines, including personal training, group fitness, boxing, kickboxing, MMA, Pilates, Olympic lifting and periodization.

“I’m the old guy and I get these young cats to keep up with me,” he laughed. “If you can keep up with me … you’re doing well.”
