Women's Health: What happens after treatment for breast cancer?

I have noticed that while we are mostly concerned with diagnosis and treatment in medical discussions regarding breast cancer, not much interest is placed on what happens after treatment.

For many women, breast cancer treatment will remove or destroy the cancer; and while the completion of treatment can be exciting, it can also be very stressful.

Yes, there is the obvious expected relief of finishing treatment, but there is also worry about the cancer coming back (recurrence), and this is a very common cause of concern and anxiety for women who have had cancer. Other areas of concern are the long-term effects of the treatment, body image concerns, sexuality, and pregnancy after breast cancer.

It will take a while before your fears and anxiety lessen; but it may also help to know that many cancer survivors have learned to live with this uncertainty and are leading full lives.

However, here are a few things that may help speed along the process.

FOLLOW-UP CARE

When your treatment ends, your doctor will want to see you at intervals to ensure all is still well. It is very important to go to ALL of your follow-up appointments, irrespective of how good you may be feeling.

Your initial follow-up appointments are usually scheduled for every three to six months. The longer you have been free of cancer, the less often the appointments will be. After five years, they will be once a year.

If you had breast-conserving surgery (only removed tumour from the breast and not the entire breast), you will require a mammogram approximately six months after surgery and radiation treatment are completed, and then every year after that. Women who had a mastectomy (removed the breast) should continue to have their yearly mammograms on the remaining breast.

At your follow-up visits, the doctor may do particular exams, and request certain lab tests or x-rays and scans to look for signs of cancer recurrence, or side effects.

Some side effects of breast cancer treatment are short-lived (lasts only a few weeks or months), while others are more long-standing. These follow-up visits are the best time to discuss these and any other concerns with your doctor.

If you are taking tamoxifen, you should, in addition to the above, have pelvic exams (done at your gynae visit) every year. This is because these drugs can increase your risk of uterine cancer. This risk is highest in women who have already gone through menopause. Be sure to tell your doctor right away about any abnormal vaginal bleeding, such as bleeding or spotting after menopause, bleeding or spotting between periods, or a change in your periods. Although this is usually caused by a non-cancerous condition, it can also be the first sign of uterine cancer.

These follow-up visits not only serve the purpose of ensuring that you are well medically and physically, but emotionally and psychologically as well.

EMOTIONAL ASPECTS OF BREAST CANCER

During the time of your cancer treatment, you may have been going through so much that you were only focusing on getting through your treatment, and getting better.

Now you might find that you think about the possibility of the cancer returning, and the possibility of your own death, or the effect of your cancer on your family, friends, and career. You may also begin to re-evaluate your relationship with your spouse or partner.

All of this can be a source of anxiety for many.

If you find that this is occurring, you will need people you can turn to for strength and comfort, and this would be an ideal time to ensure you have adequate emotional and social support.

Support can come in many forms: family, friends, cancer support groups, church or spiritual groups, online support communities, individual counsellors or books.

Almost everyone who has been through cancer will benefit from getting some type of support. However, it is not a “one size fits all” remedy. What will be best for you, will be dependent upon your situation and personality. Some people will feel most comfortable in a peer-support group, others would prefer a more informal setting, such as church, while some will feel more at ease talking one-on-one with a trusted friend or counsellor. I was even told by a cancer survivor that nothing helped her, despite trying all of the above, until she was given some cancer support books to read.

Whatever you choose your source of strength or comfort to be, just ensure you have a place to go with your concerns.

It is common to feel alone on your cancer journey, but it is not necessary or realistic to go through it all by yourself. Before long, you will realise that you too will become the source of strength for somebody just starting out on their journey, and that will be further encouragement for you to see how far along you have come.

BODY IMAGE AFTER BREAST CANCER TREATMENT

In addition to having to cope with the emotional stress that accompanies cancer and its treatment, patients with breast cancer will also find themselves dealing with changes in their appearance as a result of their treatments.

Some changes are short-term, such as the hair loss associated with chemotherapy; but even this short-term change can have a significant negative effect on how a woman feels about herself. But in these days of wigs, weaves and hair pieces being fashionable, there are numerous options available to help women cope with hair loss.

Alternatively, some women choose to wear their baldness proudly, and use it as a way to identify themselves as breast cancer survivors.

Other more permanent changes, like the loss of part or all of a breast, or even both breasts after surgical treatment, are obviously more traumatic and less of a simple fix. Some women choose to have breast reconstructive surgery after mastectomy to address this issue, while others may opt for a breast form.

If you are considering breast reconstructive surgery, it should be discussed with your doctor before surgery to treat the cancer. Decisions about the type of reconstruction and when it should be done will depend on each woman’s medical situation and personal preferences, as well of the type of reconstruction desired, as there are several types of reconstructive surgery available.

A breast form is a prosthesis (artificial body part) worn either inside a bra or attached to the body to simulate the appearance and feel of a natural breast. Breast forms can be an important alternative to breast reconstruction for women who have had a mastectomy, especially if they do not want further surgery, because breast reconstruction can sometimes require several procedures to complete.

Regardless of what your preference may be, speaking with your doctor or other members of your health-care team is a good starting point.

SEXUALITY AFTER BREAST CANCER

It is common for women to have concerns about sexuality after breast cancer. Physical changes which occur during and after treatment will make most women less comfortable with their bodies. Also, some treatments, such as chemotherapy, can change your hormone levels and may negatively affect a woman’s sexual interest and/or response. Additionally, for women in their 20s or 30s who are seeking to choose a partner or have children, a diagnosis of breast cancer can be especially difficult.

Surgical treatment for breast cancer, particularly removal of the breast, can damage a woman’s feeling of attractiveness. Our culture has taught us to view breasts as a fundamental part of beauty and femininity. If a breast has been removed, a woman may worry about whether or not her partner will still find her attractive. She may also be worried about not being able to enjoy sexual stimulation in the affected breast.

However, even after having a breast removed, some women still enjoy being stroked around the area of the healed scar – whereas other women may actually dislike being touched there and may no longer even enjoy being touched on the remaining breast and nipple. Some women who have had a mastectomy may also feel self-conscious in certain sexual positions where the area of the missing breast is more visible.

PLEASE NOTE: Although there may be emotional and self-esteem effects, breast surgery does not decrease a woman’s sexual desire, nor does it decrease her ability to have an orgasm. According to recent research, most women with early-stage breast cancer will have good sexual satisfaction and emotional adjustment within a year after their surgery, and can boast a similar quality of life to women who never had cancer.

But we cannot forget the partner in all this, because the cancer diagnosis can be very distressing for the partner, as well. Partners are usually concerned about how to express their love physically and emotionally after treatment, especially surgery. But breast cancer can be a growth experience for couples, especially when partners take part in decision making, and go along to treatments.

PREGNANCY AFTER BREAST CANCER

Some treatments for breast cancer, such as certain chemotherapy drugs, may affect a woman’s ability to have a baby (fertility). Still, many women are able to become pregnant after treatment. The best time to talk with your doctor about future fertility desires is before starting breast cancer treatment.

The concern about pregnancy after breast cancer is due to the fact that many breast cancers are sensitive to estrogen. Due to the high level of this hormone during pregnancy, there has been concern that if a woman has been treated for breast cancer, this might increase the chance of the cancer coming back. However, studies have shown that pregnancy does not increase the risk of the cancer coming back after successful treatment.

Still, it is advised that breast cancer survivors wait at least two years after all treatments are finished before trying to get pregnant. The best length of time to wait is not clear, and in some patients, breast cancer can come back after the two-year mark, so each case is different.

Each woman’s decision to wait should be based on things such as her age, fertility, desire for more pregnancies, type of breast cancer, risk of an early relapse, and the potential effect estrogen may have on her risk of a breast cancer coming back.

Women taking chemotherapy, or hormone therapy, should talk with their doctors before trying to become pregnant. These drugs can affect a growing foetus, so it isn’t safe to get pregnant until all treatments are complete.

Stopping treatment early can increase the risk of the cancer growing or coming back.

Another important thing to know is that chemotherapy for breast cancer can also damage the ovaries, sometimes causing immediate or delayed infertility. Cancer treatment can also cause women to delay trying to get pregnant. These factors together often mean that a woman has less chance of getting pregnant after breast cancer treatment.

All women who have or have had breast cancer, and are thinking about having children should talk with their doctors about how treatment could affect their chances for pregnancy. This discussion should also cover the risk of the cancer coming back. In many cases, counselling can help women sort through the choices that come with surviving breast cancer and planning a pregnancy.

The best time to have this discussion is before treatment.

So many times, women with breast cancer focus only on treating the cancer that they forget about other possible aspects and future implications of their treatment, like pregnancy. Many times, just slowing down, writing down your concerns and expectations, and discussing them with your doctor before starting treatment, can help in choosing the best-suited treatment option for you, in order to achieve your desired outcome.

And, always remember all is not lost. I once had a patient referred to me, after surgical treatment for breast cancer; and she was in a panic. She had a positive pregnancy test, and was supposed to be starting chemotherapy and radiation treatment. It was recommended that she do not continue with the pregnancy, but she was determined to have her baby, and made it clear from day one. We honoured her request and we delivered for her a healthy baby boy at 36 weeks’ pregnancy (pregnancy is 40 weeks). She returned to her treatment shortly after, and is happy every day with her beautiful baby boy, and making clear to us her desires and expectations early on.

LoveBug Probiotics ♥︎ Here"s The Skinny ♥︎ Digestive Health - Patented Delivery Technology, #1 Most Clinically Studied Strain - L. GG. 30 Day Supply. 10 Billion CFU/tablet

WHY OURS ARE SUPERIOR:
Unprotected, the vast majority of live probiotics entering the stomach won’t survive to reach optimal sites in the gastrointestinal tract. Powders, liquids, capsules, even cultured dairy products offer no real protection, losing most, if not all, of these sensitive organisms during passage through the stomach’s harsh environment.

THE BIO-TRACT DIFFERENCE:
When our tablets are moistened by fluids in the stomach, a patented gel matrix forms, creating a protective layer that shields the beneficial bacteria from stomach acids and directs them to release later in their journey. Once inside the gastrointestinal tract, our probiotics begin to release, delivering a significantly higher percentage of the good bacteria throughout the day and throughout your gut, traveling deep inside your intestinal tract to where they will have the greatest benefit. This is the only controlled-release technology available for probiotics on the market today and is patented in 33 countries.

DIRECTIONS

DAILY MAINTENANCE:
Take 1 tablet per day before food.

Udon Thani model a guide for tackling teenage pregnancy, sex issues

The Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth) and Udon Thani provincial authorities worked jointly on the project to develop a sustainable and integrated policy to tackle issues of youth sexual health.

Sirikiat Liangkorbkij, who heads the ThaiHealth Health Risk Control II Section, recently took the media to see the pilot area of the “Udon Model” in Nong Saeng district’s Tambon Saeng Sawang.

He said the project over the past three years had focused on developing a tambon-level network to work with local administrative organisations and youth groups. It sought to shift the view that sexuality was a social issue, with health officials being supporters, rather than leaders, to help solve the problem of teenage pregnancies.

The project focused on five aspects: strategic management; comprehensive sex education; creative space; friendly health and social services; mobilising resources and extended results. Youths and children, who were the “target groups”, were able to participate all the way.

These efforts paid off. Many young people changed their attitude, becoming more aware and giving importance to teenage pregnancy issues, Nong Seang Hospital director Dr Seubsiri Bunditpirom said.

She said the number of pregnant teens aged 15-19 in Tambon Saeng Sawang reduced from 55 per 1,000 population in 2014, to 34 per 1,000 this year.

Officials expect the project – Udon Model – will expand to cover the whole province by 2017 and reduce the overall teenage pregnancy rate to under 50 per 1,000 people, she said. In this key policy, district-level agencies served as co-ordinators for public health; that involved local bodies, schools and health units, she explained.

As part of the project, a youth volunteer group Onson Saeng Sawang (“Caring Saeng Sawang”) was formed to give information on well-being and sex to young people at local schools and groups seen as “at risk”. The topics the group talked about included safe sex, sexually transmitted diseases, and how to use a condom.

They also provided a training group called Phuyai Jaidee (“Kind adults”) for parents and older people to have better understanding when counselling youth.

The training stressed that adults – notably parents – should have a “small mouth, big ears and wide-open heart” – “talk less, listen more and be open-minded”, Sirikiat said.

A 17-year-old male volunteer, Kaewkanda Paengpaen, an Onson Saeng Sawang representative, said he and many friends gathered to provide reproductive health infor-mation to other youths and raise awareness about problems.

“Besides having a chance to help the community, I also benefit from taking part in this project. From not knowing anything about sexuality, now I have more information I can pass on to others,” said the boy whose feminine personality once alienated him from others. The project let him be himself and have fun while presenting information and eventually being accepted by his companions and the community.

Phuyai Jaidee attendee Arun Jainongbua said she misunderstood and tended to be very strict with her children. But after undergoing the training, she tried to adjust her attitude and be more open-minded when talking and listening to her children, so the family was more understanding and happier. “We must have the knowledge first so we can talk to them [the children]. We now dare to talk with them about the use of condoms, not just scolding them or just banning them from doing this and that,” Arun said.

Arun said her youngest son, in Mathayom 1, joined Onson Saeng Sawang’s training so they, the mother and son, found it easier to talk and discuss issues like prevention of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

Tambon Saeng Sawang is one of 10 exemplary tambons in Udon Thani province – which has some 57 tambons in 10 districts – that has propelled the project over the past three years.

The project developed 15 Phuyai Jaidee groups and 35 youth groups in 10 tambons, while also setting up social media channels such as Line chat programme and Facebook to help solve teens’ problems.

Austin foundation hopes to bring men's health issues to forefront

CENTRAL TEXAS — Men in Central Texas are teaming up to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues.

“Men are 30 years behind women in health, and it’s really important that we start to talk about our health,” said Matt Ferstler, the CEO and founder of the Austin-based Testicular Cancer Foundation. Ferstler was a college student at St. Edward’s University when he first noticed something was off.

“January 2008, I noticed there was something different down there. I talked to my parents, I talked to everybody — they said, ‘Oh they’re perfectly fine,"” Ferstler said.

But a year later, Ferstler still felt off. When he went to see a urologist, he was diagnosed with Stage 1 testicular cancer. He was treated with outpatient surgery, and underwent testing for five years after his initial diagnosis.

Frustrated with the lack of information available, Ferstler started the Testicular Cancer Foundation. One of their biggest pushes was No Shave November, a worldwide push where men grow their facial hair during the month of November, and pledge donations to a variety of men’s health charities. Ferstler teamed up with about a dozen police departments throughout Central Texas to raise the funds. But besides funding, it’s created an important dialogue.

“People all the time notice that somebody has a beard on that doesn’t normally wear a beard. And they say, ‘Hey what are you doing that for?"” said Ferstler. He said he’s excited about the growth of the push in Central Texas.

“Every officer that pays $25 towards the organization is then allowed at that department to grow a beard. We’re seeing that this year, we went from two departments last year to 10 to 15 total departments. And we’re really excited to see the growth in that,” said Ferstler. They’re still collecting pledges from people who participated, but estimate they will raise $15,000 this year.

Testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer among men 15- to 35-years-old. For older men, physicians said to beware of prostate cancer.

“Eighty percent of men, when they die, autopsy’s show that they have some type of prostate cancer,” said Dr. Matthew McCurdy, a radiation oncologist who practices at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center.

Dr. McCurdy said advances in tests have made it easier to detect, but there is growing debate over the need for such tests.  He says the Center for Medicare Service is pushing to stop prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening.

“We may actually revert back to what we saw twenty, thirty years ago, where men would be diagnosed with prostate cancer when it would spread to the bone and they would be dying of prostate cancer instead of other causes,” said Dr. McCurdy.

Prostate cancer is a slow-growing cancer, and is believed to be an underlying cause rather than a direct cause of death in most cases. McCurdy said the U.S. Preventive Serves Task Force performed a randomized trial that showed there was no change in prostate cancer deaths using PSA screening. However, he disagrees with the group’s study methods.

“There were several significant flaws, scientific flaws, statistical flaws in that trial that have been repeatedly presented to the U.S. Preventive (Services) Task Force,” McCurdy said.

He encourages all men in their 50s to begin getting tested for prostate cancer, and to learn about family history of the disease.

Surviving the Death of Your Ex, a New Book from Praeclarus Press, Offers Hope to Those Coping ...

December 26, 2015 —

Surviving the Death of Your Ex, a New Book from Praeclarus Press, Offers Hope to Those Coping With the Death of a Former Spouse

The death of a spouse is a traumatic event, and there are many supports available for the survivor. But what happens when an Ex-spouse or partner dies? There are few ways to acknowledge that often complicated grief. In a society where multiple marriages are the norm and many families are comprised of siblings from multiple parents, how does one begin the mourn the death of a former spouse or parent? The death of an ex can lead to a plethora of mixed emotions: grief, sorrow, anger, confusion, and guilt. These feelings can be overwhelming, and there may not be anyone who understands the experience. In Surviving the Death of Your Ex, co-editors, Robyn Hass and Robbie Davis-Floyd, share their stories of losing their ex-husbands and the range of emotions that they experienced. They also reached out and brought together stories of other women. Each story is unique, but all share similarities.

Surviving the Death of Your Ex helps those see they are not alone. It also provides valuable advice for coping and a list of helpful resources. Readers like Melanie White have noted, I wish I could have accessed something like this long before the death of my ex. I wouldve been more enlightened and had a tiny heads up on the journey. And Annette Birchard, whose former spouse experienced an untimely and tragic death, commented after reading, After the murder of my ex-husband, I searched online for information on how to help myself and my daughter, but I didnt find very much material. This book will provide a valuable resource for those who have experienced the death of an ex-spouse. In the 21st century, blended families are common, and resources to help surviving ex-spouses and children are desperately needed. They hope to reach a group of women who are largely ignored in the grief process, but need emotional support during this challenging time.

Robyn Hass, MSW, MPH is a very happily re-married wife and mom to two young boys and three beautiful step-daughters. After completing a double masters degree in social work and public health in 2002, Robyn began working for an international firm providing public health and business management consulting to various high-profile clients, including the U.S. Department of Defense. She has since retired from the consulting world, and she and her husband now own a small business together.

Robbie Davis-FloyD, PhD, is a Senior Research Fellow, Department of Anthropology, University of Texas, Austin, and Fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology. She is an internationally renowned speaker, author of over 80 published articles, and author, co-author, or lead editor for 10 volumes, including Birth as an American Rite of Passage.

Ms. Hass and Dr. Davis-Floyd decided to collaborate on this book when they mutually discovered that they wanted to write about their experiences of dealing with the deaths of their ex-husbands, and to find others who wished to do the same. They share a strong passion for hearing womens voices and providing a forum for their stories. That shared passion has resulted in this book. Both are based in Austin, Texas.

Praeclarus Press is a small press that specializes in womens health founded by health psychologist Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, PhD, IBCLC, FAPA. It features books, webinars, and products that support women’s health throughout their lifespan. Based in Amarillo, Texas, the mission of Praeclarus Press is to produce materials that change womens lives.

Where Is the Debate on HIV and AIDS?

“What’s your biggest weakness?” “Fantasy sports betting: Is this gambling and should it be allowed?”

Believe it or not, these were questions asked in presidential primary debates this year. Thus far, the candidates have been asked to answer silly questions on fantasy sports betting, personal finances, their energy levels, and some even took a bold stand on the vital question of whether they would kill baby Hitler if they could travel back in time.

To date, there has not been a single question related to HIV or AIDS.

Debate moderators are not the only ones at fault. Candidates have made it a point to dedicate their valuable mike time to tout prior accomplishments and make personal attacks when they could be talking about issues of critical importance — like how to prevent the disease that has already killed approximately 39 million people worldwide.

Every day, about 5,600 people worldwide contract HIV — more than 230 every hour. There are currently more than 1.2 million people living with the infection in the United States, and we can expect roughly an additional 50,000 new HIV infections next year. Even more unsettling than these statistics is the fact that we no longer have a conversation about finding a cure. Why is it that we let our call to arms fade away into barely a whisper?

Successful activism and scientific advancements have brought us to an historic crossroads. HIV and AIDS is no longer a death sentence. New lifesaving medication strategies like PrEP and PEP are over 90 percent effective in preventing HIV in healthy individuals. But real challenges remain, from access to health care and accurate sexual health information, to emerging threats like the recent surge in heroin use. Despite our progress, almost one in eight people in the United States with HIV are unaware of their status.

We can’t afford to let future generations forget how serious and devastating a disease this is. Any serious contender who claims to be the “next generation’s” candidate should have a thoughtful and purposeful strategy that expands access to prevention tools nationwide and seeks to end the HIV and AIDS epidemic.

And this strategy should be shared with the world.  The presidential debates may not be talking about HIV and AIDS, but we are.

Gay Men’s Health Crisis is serving as the unofficial debate monitor this election cycle — asking the critical questions that no one has asked.

All 18 presidential candidates, Republicans and Democrats, have been invited to make their HIV and AIDS agendas clear and public by January 18 by filling out this election cycle’s first HIV and AIDS questionnaire. This survey is not going to be used to endorse any candidate. The purpose of the survey is simple — to ensure that the public and all those affected by the epidemic understand every candidate’s views on HIV and AIDS.

Some questions center on broad health care issues that relate to HIV prevention and treatment, such as access to health care and pharmaceutical price gouging. Candidates are asked to state their position on federal protection from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in housing, the workplace, and other areas. They are also asked how they plan to improve upon the reach of Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act, an issue relevant to all Americans, especially those living with HIV and AIDS.

Other survey questions hone in on precise policies such as funding for HIV education, prevention, and treatment research and programs, and HIV and gender-based violence. The survey presses candidates to explain their plans for the services and programs that, for millions, are vital to their overall health and well-being.

These might not be questions that produce the best sound bites or rile up the crowd. But they are questions that matter to millions of Americans affected by the epidemic, and hundreds of millions of people around the world.

KELSEY LOUIE is the CEO of Gay Men’s Health Crisis.

Four foods that are good for digestion

Four foods that are good for digestion| TheNewsTribe.com

A healthy digestive system is the guarantee to a healthy life. Condition of your gut marks the condition of your overall health. So, your gut area requires proper attention.

Here are a few foods that are good for digestion.

Ginger

Often known as the ‘universal medicine’ in India, it stimulates the digestive systems, helping us to relieve of any uncomfortable gas and bloating.

Lentils and Beans

Legumes, especially black beans and lentils, are excellent sources of soluble fiber. Once it passes through your system, soluble fiber soaks up water, which bulks up your stool. The healthy bacteria in the gut ferment the fiber into short-chain fatty acids which have considerable health benefits, like serving as an energy source for cells that line the intestinal tract.

Pineapple

Pineapple is super soothing to our stomachs since it contains a special digestive enzyme called bromelain, which helps us break down proteins, making it easy to digest and absorb nutrients. Bromelain also has anti-inflammatory properties which are helpful in easing stomach aches and discomfort.

Yogurt

Yogurt selections labeled with live or active cultures contain strains of bacteria which can enhance your bowel movements and help you maintain a healthy digestive system. Use it in your regular meals, add fresh fruits for variety and avoid buying those which have sugar added to it.

Can cooling clothes really burn fat? Thin Ice's claims crackle under weight

People struggling with their weight make easy targets for scams. Fat-busting pills, fad diets, and workout gadgets come and go as their popularity is overwhelmed by their ineffectiveness. Now a line of clothing purportedly tricks your body into losing weight by “hacking your metabolism” — but are the only hacks here those selling the phony technology?

“This would be too uncomfortable to tolerate for the many, many months of wearing Thin Ice that would be required to produce any significant weight loss.”

The Thin Ice Weight Loss Clothing Line, recently backed on Indiegogo by more than half a million dollars, is designed to trick your body into thinking you’re cold and burning fat to keep you warm. The team behind Thin Ice is kicking off the line with two items to target areas of your body with a lot of thermoreceptors (nerves that detect temperature changes). The first is a tank top, dubbed a “vest.” The second is a pair of insoles. Peltier cooling strips (used to cool compact electronics) and the rechargeable battery that powers them are built in. Both garments connect to the Thin Ice Android or iOS app using Bluetooth Low Energy so you can see how many calories you’ve burned and control the temperature.

Turn the temp down and watch the weight fall off, the company claims.

And don’t worry, you won’t freeze to death: Even if you turn the temp as low as it will go, the company says you won’t end up shivering. The cooling mechanism targets specific parts of your body to trick your nervous system and avoid triggering the shiver response. The science is explained in depth in Scientific American and the New England Journal of Medicineamong others. In short, cold triggers your brown adipose tissue (BAT) to consume lipids (A.K.A. fat) to produce heat, and Thin Ice is designed to affect that consumption without chilling you enough to cause muscle spasms (shivering).

Weight-loss facts and figures

It all sounds very clever, as does Adam Paulin, the creator of Thin Ice Clothing — an NCAA athlete who holds degrees in neurology and psychology from the University of Toronto. But is it real? One backer questioned Adam, asserting on the company’s Indiegogo page that research says the temperature range required for thermogenesis — the process of internal heat production that burns fat — is lower than what the clothes can achieve. Adam’s response was simply to assert there were studies saying the opposite. (Paulin did not respond to multiple emails from Digital Trends.)

That’s the thing about emerging technologies: If you want to be an early adopter, it helps to do your own research. Some backers may have not have read the New England Journal of Medicine study listed on Thin Ice’s Indiegogo page thoroughly enough. Consider the statement of conclusion in that paper, which notes that “mean brown-adipose-tissue activity was significantly lower in the overweight or obese subjects than in the lean subjects.” This means that the heavier you are, the less effective cold therapy may be for you.

Thin-Ice-Weight-Loss-002

Digital Trends reached out to Shaun Morrison, a member of the Department of Neurological Surgery at Oregon Health and Science University for his thoughts. Morrison was skeptical, to say the least. “The BAT in overweight and obese humans cannot be activated by cooling,” he wrote to us. “Thus, the ThinIce approach is not expected to activate the BAT in overweight people and thus isn’t expected to produce weight loss in overweight people.”

Dr. Morrison would know. He’s currently running a study on central inhibitory regulation of brown adipose thermogenesis, and has studied the central regulation of sympathetic activity to brown fat in previous work. While he said there was hope for people with a normal body mass index, he pointed out that over time even their Thin Ice results might suffer.

“Although skin blood flow should be reduced in the areas of the Thin Ice stimulation, the normal level of heat production from the basic metabolic processes in the body of an adult human could produce a subcutaneous temperature that would counteract a mild cooling from the ThinIce outside the skin, resulting in little stimulation of cool thermoreceptors, and little activation of BAT.” After a while, the body would simply adjust to counteract mild external cooling.

“This phenomenon could require that the ThinIce product must produce a greater level of skin cooling to get BAT activation, and, at some point, this would be too uncomfortable to tolerate for the many, many months of wearing Thin Ice that would be required to produce any significant weight loss.”

Maybe some backers did read the studies attached to the Indiegogo page and are aware that no one can lose weight with cold alone. To be fair, the Thin Ice app also suggests meals and workouts to “supercharge” weight loss. However, Dr. Morrison went on to point out that over time wearing cooling clothes might change your metabolism, making you feel hungrier.

“I would be concerned that if BAT were continuously activated (even at some low level) and energy stored in fat were consumed by BAT to produce heat, the brain circuits regulating metabolism would sense this sustained energy consumption and attempt to reinstate the energy stores in fat by increasing food consumption, thereby eliminating any weight loss effect of the BAT activation.” So Thin Ice might turn the little rumble in a dieter’s stomach into a gnawing gurgle of emptiness.

On the other hand, maybe backers haven’t really paid attention at all. Based on funding alone, it appears backers are all in, regardless of Thin Ice’s actual effectiveness. The Thin Ice Weight Loss campaign was 3,786 percent funded as of September 17. People grabbed shirts and insoles for $100, saving 35 percent off the projected retail. Who wouldn’t want a shortcut to weight loss? Besides, some people readily spend this amount on workout gear, so it’s not a totally ridiculous ask for a smart shirt that connects to an app.

Unfortunately, there are limitations on this gear you don’t normally see on garment tag. For instance, you can’t run Think Ice through the washer (the company recommends using antibiotic wipes for regular cleanings). And the insoles aren’t for high-impact activities like running or basketball, but more to keep you cool during your daily errands.

It’s possible consumers wearing those insoles won’t be the only ones with cold feet. The company just missed its December shipping deadline, which is still listed on the Indiegogo site. An update on the site explains: “In our last email update in November, we told you that we were looking forward to shipping your Thin Ice weight loss product in the spring. We are happy and excited to tell you that we remain on target.”

Will it ship in the Spring? Like a foodie after Thanksgiving, the wait is still on.
